A Long Duration Energy Storage Approach

Addressing our climate emergencies demands we act now!

The California Public Utilities Commission, along with other state agencies and energy experts agree that long duration energy storage is critical to successfully achieving our climate goals.

It is imperative that we start adopting long duration energy storage technologies and building these projects to ensure success in fighting climate change.

Long duration energy storage is key to increasing and enhancing renewable energy generation and grid reliability.

-JULIA PROCHNIK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF LONG DURATION ENERGY STORAGE ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA

What is long duration energy storage?

  • Unlike current storage technologies like batteries, long duration energy storage provides large amounts of renewable energy back to the grid.
  • Long duration energy storage ensures renewable energy is on the grid and provides a reliable source of energy for prolonged periods of times that can last for 10 hours or more and can be used during specific days, weeks or seasonally.

How does long duration energy storage help achieve climate goals?

  • Long duration energy storage technologies can replace coal and gas peaker plants, turn variable renewables into round-the-clock resources, and pave the way for a carbon-free grid.
  • Long duration energy storage can provide local and system-wide benefits throughout the state to provide reliability and resiliency.

Why do we need long duration energy storage?

  • The California Energy Storage Association states CA will need 11 GW of long duration energy storage deployed by 2030, and that number will escalate significantly requiring 45–55 GW by 2045.

In order to meet California’s climate goals and achieve 100% renewable and zero-carbon electricity resources by 2045, an analysis by the CPUC indicates that the state needs as much as 70 GW of energy storage and all storage after 2030 must have a minimum duration of 6 hour or longer.

What are examples of long duration energy storage?

Collaborating on efforts to achieve a clean energy future, is a great way for California to celebrate Earth Day and show our commitment to reaching our climate goals.
