On locs and… Well, just locs

As I write this, all that’s coming to mind is one ‘sudden entry’ WhatsApp sticker that cracks me up.

Let’s talk about locs. My locs.

A friend of mine said my locs are my pride and joy, and to be honest, he’s not even wrong. I love my locs so much. Easily one of the best decisions I made in 2022.

I started the most random ‘series’ on my WhatsApp status, called ‘Is it an insect or one of my locs?’ So, the thing where I feel a brush on my neck and I have to figure out if it’s one of my locs or an insect. You get the idea. It is with great annoyance that I say that for the most part of March and April, I had the most random insects on my neck, and one time, it was a thread.

On Friday, I had my first loc appointment since last December. But, first, length check!

My loctician was so stressed when she saw the undergrowth I had, but of course, she made it work. Surprisingly, it was a pretty painless experience. I decided to try a new style I found on Pinterest — specifically for my church anniversary service — and while I saw the vision, when they were done styling it, I wondered if the vision saw me back because I wasn’t feeling it one bit, and I know better than to trust people in a salon. “It’s fine nau. Very fine.” Please please. It grew on me over the weekend, anyway, so I guess they were right.

Why didn’t I go for a retwist all this while, you may ask (or not)? First of all, I wanted my locs to just breathe. My locs aren’t equal in size or length, which I like, but overtime, I noticed that some of the slimmer locs started looking thinner and bumpy. So, I wanted them to just grow on their own, hence my dada arc these past four months. It has been fun experimenting with my locs, anyway. My go-to hairstyle was a messy high bun with two to four locs down. It’s a cute style, and it works with the undergrowth. I was also in my Rapunzel arc for a bit, and I got pretty good reviews. I should let down my locs more outside. It’s just that it’s so hot outside!

Also, recently, I’ve had a bit of a dandruff phase. It has been quite stressful because I didn’t even change anything in my routine, so, why this? I’m trying a new shampoo and I can’t really tell if it’s working, but let’s see. If you have any affordable but effective shampoos I could try, helpppp.

The dada arc was a fun time, but I like the fact that I can see my scalp, I can see the growth, and my forehead has that new hair glow. ✨
