My Spreadsheets Were Perfect. I Was a Mess.

For five years, I did the retirement math.
I checked our 401(k) statements like other people check the weather. I ran scenarios in spreadsheets. What if I retire at 68? At 70? What if the market drops? What if we sell the house? I had a tab for everything.
I knew our portfolio balance down to the penny.
What I could not tell you was what I would do on a Wednesday afternoon.
I prepared for one thing
Here is the strange part. I had decades to get ready, and I spent all of it getting ready for the wrong thing.
I told myself I was preparing for retirement. But I was only preparing for the money part. The numbers. The part that fit neatly into a spreadsheet and gave me a clear answer at the bottom of the column.
The other part, I kept putting off. Who would I be without the word “Director” attached to my name? What would my husband and I actually do with each other all day? There was always next month, next quarter, next year to figure that out.
Then came the April phone call. And my “next year” disappeared.
Sixteen weeks of severance became my entire transition period. That was it. That was all the time I got to go from a professional with a title to whatever I was now.
We study the wrong numbers
I have since learned I am not unusual in this. We pore over our financial statements. We avoid looking at the emotional landscape of retirement entirely.
We know what our accounts are worth. We cannot answer a simpler question. What will I do with myself once the work is gone?
I had spreadsheets for retirement income. Every scenario you could imagine. But a plan for how to introduce myself at a party without my job title? I did not have that. Not even close.
The irony is that once your finances are adequate, and mine were, money is no longer the thing that decides how this goes. It is the emotional and practical preparation that determines whether those first months feel like freedom or a free fall.
My spreadsheets were perfect.
I was a mess.
The conversation we never had
Ed and I had been married almost 48 years. You would think we had talked about this. Really talked. We had not.
So suddenly I was home. He was home. And I did not even know whose job it was to buy the groceries anymore.
He had been doing the shopping since he retired. So did I take that over now? Did he keep doing it? It sounds like nothing. It sounds almost silly to admit. But nobody tells you that retirement is full of these small, unspoken questions, and that the two of you are supposed to answer them somehow without ever having practiced.
We figured it out eventually. We are still figuring some of it out. But we did it the hard way, in real time, while I was already raw from everything else.
What I want you to take from this
Please do not make my mistake.
I had 45 years to think about retirement, and I still got it wrong. Do you know why? Because I only thought about the money. I ran those numbers a hundred different ways. The question of who I would be without my title never crossed my mind.
If you are still working, you have something I did not give myself. Time to do the other kind of preparation. Not the spreadsheet kind. The harder kind.
Have the awkward conversation with your spouse about what being together all the time will really mean. Find one thing you enjoy that has nothing to do with your career. Build a friendship or two outside of work, while you still have the easy excuse of seeing those people every day.
The money matters. I am not telling you it doesn’t. You need enough, and without it, no amount of good feeling will fix the stress of wondering whether you can pay your bills.
But once you have enough, more of it will not save you. The rest of the work is the part that will. And it is the part almost nobody does.
I did the easy homework for five years and called it preparation. Don’t be me. Do the hard homework too.
