Today was one of those busy days where work almost took over everything but I still managed to study a bit. I started the next section in Chapter 1: How businesses get work done and what makes a business.

Even though I don’t own a business, I realized it’s still important to understand how businesses operate, especially as someone working in information security. Businesses drive the need for security and understanding how they function helps you see where security fits in.

Today I learned about what a business really is, how businesses organize themselves, and how they govern their activities. I went through different types of business structures from being a sole proprietor, to partnerships, corporations, and even being an investor.

It made me think: even if I’m not running my own company, I could still build a “business” for myself by working as a consultant one day. In that case, I’ll need to understand how decisions are made, how operations are structured, and how organizations measure success.

Understanding business will help me understand how and why decisions are made where I work and how security supports those decisions.
