A Surprising Show of Civility: Walz and Vance Face Off in a Polite VP Debate

The tone of the Walz-Vance debate stood in stark contrast to the contentious and often chaotic exchanges seen in previous presidential and vice-presidential debates, particularly between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris or Trump and Joe Biden. Unlike those debates marked by frequent interruptions and personal attacks, Walz and Vance maintained a respectful and measured dialogue. Their willingness to engage thoughtfully on key issues without resorting to inflammatory rhetoric offered a refreshing shift, especially for viewers accustomed to the more combative style of recent political showdowns.

With the start of early voting procedures in many states and the general election day just five weeks away, Tuesday’s debate, hosted by CBS News, was the only chance for Republican Senator J.D. Vance and Democratic Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz to introduce themselves and their positions on key election issues to the American public.

Viewers anticipated a fierce showdown, but instead, the two men succeeded in presenting a generally positive image to undecided and independent voters. The debate was calm and avoided the personal attacks that marked the debate between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Tuesday’s debate, which lasted more than 90 minutes, marked the first time Walz and Vance met face-to-face. Despite it being the only debate between the vice-presidential candidates, it is unlikely to change anything in the presidential campaign or the chances of Trump and Harris, as both candidates claimed victory in this round.

Although the candidates clashed over important issues, such as the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters, as well as topics like abortion and immigration, both maintained a polite tone in their responses to each other, choosing instead to direct their criticisms toward the presidential candidates, Trump and Harris.

Walz stated that he believed his opponent, Vance, genuinely wanted to solve the country’s immigration crisis, but questioned whether former President Donald Trump truly shared that belief. In response, Vance acknowledged that Walz also wanted to address the issue, but raised doubts about Harris’ commitment to the same cause.

Walz agreed with much of what Senator Vance said about Americans’ distrust of the Republicans’ handling of the abortion issue. Vance similarly noted that he and Walz “probably agree that we need to do a better job” addressing gun violence. Walz also admitted that he agreed with much of what Vance said about trade policies that allowed manufacturing jobs in many U.S. states to be outsourced.

This high level of agreement between the candidates’ positions led to mockery from hardliners in both camps. Simon Sanders, an MSNBC host and former aide to Kamala Harris, criticized Walz for “not attacking Vance.” He tweeted on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter), saying, “If you agree with Vance on so much, why should we vote for you?”

Vance earned praise from many viewers after Walz recalled the time his teenage son witnessed a shooting. Vance responded kindly, saying, “Tim, first of all, I didn’t know your 17-year-old son witnessed a shooting, and I’m sorry for that.”
