You Are Not A Victim Of Your Life, You Are The Author Of It

How do I stop making excuses for my life?

Stop making excuses and take responsibility. True. Also impossible to hear from inside the excuse, because from there it does not feel like an excuse at all. It feels like the most accurate description of your life you have ever produced.

That is the actual problem. An excuse is a reason that has been given more weight than it deserves. And the weight feels real. The circumstance feels real. The limitation feels real. You are not lying to yourself on purpose. You genuinely believe the narrative that formed around why things are the way they are.

So the question is not how to stop making excuses. The question is how to see the excuse clearly while you are inside it.

For every excuse you carry, ask one question: is this the reason or is this the story I built around the reason? Because there is always something real underneath an excuse. A genuine difficulty, a real constraint. But between that real thing and the narrative you built around it is a gap, and in that gap is a choice. The narrative is not the reality. The narrative is what you have been choosing to do with the reality.

Now you tell me, but some of my limitations are genuinely real. They are. And I am not saying they are not. The limitation and the story about what it means are two different things. The limitation might be fixed. The story about what you can do inside the limitation is always a choice.

Be sure that every excuse you currently carry was at some point a choice to explain rather than move. That choice made sense at the time. The question is whether it is still serving you or whether you are now serving it.

What would you do differently tomorrow if the excuse you are holding right now turned out not to be true?

How do I stop being a victim of my own circumstances?

You are not a victim, you have a choice. And from the outside that is completely true. From the inside, the victim position does not feel like a position at all. It feels like the most honest description of what is actually happening.

That is the defining property of the victim position. It feels like an accurate description of what is happening rather than a frame that was placed on what is happening. And because it feels like reality rather than interpretation, it is very hard to examine from the inside.

Here is the structural mechanism. The victim position is built on one belief: that the source of my current condition is outside me. The circumstances decided. The people decided. The history decided. And if the source is outside, then the solution must also be outside, which means waiting for the outside to change before anything internal can change.

That waiting is the core of the victim position. Not the suffering itself. The waiting.

Now here is what shifts it. Not positive thinking and not willpower. Just the accurate recognition of one thing: the current position, however it was assembled, is now the position from which every next choice is made. Not by the circumstances. By you. From here.

That recognition does not erase what happened. It does not make anyone who hurt you retroactively less responsible for what they did. It does not minimize the difficulty. It just closes one specific exit. The exit that says the situation cannot change until something outside changes first.

Trust me, closing that exit is genuinely uncomfortable. And it is the only move that actually produces change.

What would you do tomorrow if you accepted that no one and nothing outside you is going to change first?

Why is taking responsibility so hard?

Taking responsibility is the mark of a mature person. True. Also completely unhelpful to anyone who is still trying to understand why something so simple keeps feeling impossible.

Taking responsibility is hard for a structural reason, not a character one. When you take responsibility for a position you are in, you are simultaneously closing the exit that the external explanation was providing. And that exit was doing something important. It was protecting you from the specific discomfort of being the source of your own difficulty.

As long as the circumstance is responsible, the self is not under examination. The moment you take responsibility, the self becomes the object of scrutiny. And the conditioning that most people carry around themselves, the accumulated writing on the blank page about what it means to have made mistakes, to have failed, to have been wrong, makes that scrutiny feel like a verdict rather than information.

That is why responsibility feels like self-attack. Because for most people, accountability and blame were never separated. They were learned as the same operation. And blame is genuinely painful, so the brain treats responsibility as a threat and avoids it through every available mechanism.

The way through this is the distinction between the two. Blame says you are wrong as a person. Accountability says you made a choice that produced a consequence. Blame is a verdict. Accountability is information. Verdicts are permanent and painful. Information is usable.

Be sure you have been avoiding accountability because it felt like blame. And be sure the blame is something you added to the accountability, not something that is inherently part of it.

What would taking responsibility for one specific thing feel like if you separated it completely from any judgment about what it says about who you are?
