Why SMS is Obsolete and What’s Taking Its Place

Mobile messaging is in the middle of a major transformation, and the days of the simple SMS are numbered. According to a new analysis from Juniper Research’s Mobile Messaging Tech Horizon 2025 report, old tools are rapidly becoming obsolete, and the future is all about richer, smarter, and more secure communication.

The Fall of the SMS Empire

The writing is on the wall for the once-dominant SMS message. As the report bluntly states, “A2P SMS will decline as a business messaging channel over the next five years.” The reasons are simple: soaring costs and rampant fraud have made it an underperforming and unsustainable technology for businesses.

Even its media-rich cousin, MMS, is not immune. After its traffic dropped for the first time in its key North American market, a comeback is now considered “highly unlikely.” The era of basic text messaging is officially coming to a close.

The Three Technologies Driving the Future

So, what’s filling this vacuum? The report identifies three Major Movers that are set to disrupt the market in the next year.

1. RCS Business Messaging (RBM) RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is the interactive successor to SMS. For years, its adoption was slow because it wasn’t supported on iPhones. That all changed with Apple’s recent support, and now the floodgates are open. The report predicts that by 2025, two-thirds of all mobile subscribers will have RCS-capable phones, making it a powerful channel for businesses to use rich media, branding, and interactive buttons.

2. Number Verification We’ve all received a security code via text (OTP). But this method is insecure and a prime target for fraud. The replacement is a smarter, more secure system using direct verification APIs from network operators. As businesses migrate from two-factor authentication via text, these new APIs will become the go-to for secure mobile authentication.

3. Conversational AI The power of AI is making customer interactions more intelligent. Thanks to accessible cloud platforms, businesses can now use AI-powered chatbots that offer dynamic, personalized conversations. As more companies adopt rich channels like RCS, they will rely on conversational AI to handle these chats at scale, improving the customer experience and freeing up human agents for more complex tasks.

The Rise of Smarter Engagement

The shift isn’t limited to just these three. The report highlights several other smart technologies that are already performing strongly:

  • OTT Business Messaging: Channels like WhatsApp are booming, with revenues growing over 50% in 2024 alone. Their ease of use and rich features are making them a top choice for business-to-customer communication.
  • Generative AI: This technology is moving from hype to practical application, powering more natural-sounding chatbots and creating hyper-personalized marketing messages. Juniper Research forecasts its revenue in mobile messaging will jump from $800 million in 2024 to over $3.9 billion by 2026.
  • Agentic AI: Still in its early stages, this advanced AI uses multiple systems to automate complex, multi-step tasks. It can, for example, write a marketing message, then decide the perfect time and recipient to send it for maximum impact, all without human intervention.
  • Customer Data Platforms (CDPs): To create the hyper-personalized messages that these new channels require, businesses are increasingly relying on CDPs. These platforms are becoming essential for gathering and using customer data to personalize communications in real-time.

While most new technologies are gaining traction, the report notes that some established tools have become stagnant. CRM platforms, while still vital, haven’t evolved as quickly in the messaging space. Similarly, Sentiment Analysis Solutions, which help bots understand a user’s emotional state, have struggled to demonstrate a clear return on investment, making them a hard sell for smaller businesses.
