THE BUS STATION by Jenn Webster

It was a rainy morning at a city bus station; there is something quiet about a bus station, especially on a Sunday morning in 1956. But then again, there's something wonderful about this bus station: even on a Sunday, a few buses stop there. And so, with that, the first bus rolled on by and stopped; a young woman got off, stopped by the coffee shop to order coffee and a donut, then sat down. Next, another bus approached the bus station and stopped. A young man got off the bus, sat down on the bench for a moment, then went straight to the coffee shop and ordered a coffee. At first, the young man began looking for a table by the window to watch the rain; however, he could not find the right seat anywhere!

All the young man could find was the seat where the young woman was seated; he asked the lady if he could sit there, and she said yes, so he sat down. At first, as they ate, the young man and woman ignored each other. But then, as if by magic, the young woman and man started to get a closer look at each other…and then smiled. Just then, the young man sat by the young woman, and he introduced himself, while the young woman also introduced herself; the young woman then spoke to the young man about all of the things that she had been through in her life, and the young man replied by speaking to her about the things that had been happening in his life. The young man and woman continued talking until they looked at their watches and realized it was time to get on the bus, as it was about to leave in a few minutes! With that in mind, the young man thanked the young woman for giving him the time to talk to her, and the young lady thanked the young man for his company, and then they parted ways.

Yes, even on a rainy Sunday morning at a bus station, you often find the time to talk to someone who needs company and a perfect conversation. ©2026 Jenn Webster
