Listen: Romy’s Take on a 1996 Classic Pop Hit

“Always Forever” Is Set to Be Your Summer Anthem of 2024

Last year, Romy, known for her work with The xx, soared to new heights with her debut solo album Mid Air. As her bandmates focused on their respective projects — The xx back in the studio and Jamie xx with a new record on the way— Romy continued to carve out her own path. During her spring shows, she introduced a new song that caught her fan’s attention: a fresh take on Donna Lewis’ ’90s hit “I Love You Always Forever.” Today, Romy released the studio version of “Always Forever” as a single, alongside producers Fred Again and Joy Anonymous.

Romy expressed her gratitude to Donna Lewis on Instagram, thanking her for the blessing to sample the iconic song. “We love the original so much, and our version has been some years in the making, so we can’t wait for you all to hear it,” Romy wrote.

The Story Behind “Always Forever”

The music video for “Always Forever” was directed by filmmaker Charlotte Wells, known for her work on the critically acclaimed Aftersun (2022). Wells, a longtime fan of The xx, had previously reached out to Romy, hoping she could contribute to Aftersun. Though their schedules didn’t align then, their paths eventually crossed for this project.

A Brief History

With The xx, Romy released three critically acclaimed albums that explored minimalistic soundscapes and introspective lyrics. After the single, “Lifetime,” and her collaboration with Fred Again and HAAi, “Lights Out,” Romy released her debut solo album Mid Air in 2023. Embracing dance beats and electronic influences, the album featured notable singles like “Lifetime,” “Enjoy Your Life,” and “She’s On My Mind.”
