Sometimes Love Is Just Staying Until the Whistle

The important moments almost never look important from the outside.
A mother sits on cheap metal bleachers at her son’s game.
She wears sunglasses because she knows she might cry.
She brings no snacks because he told her not to.
His father brings the right ones.
That hurts more than it should.
Because small logistics can become proof of whole absences.
She wants to leave.
Of course she does.
Leaving is clean. Leaving preserves the story. Leaving prevents the humiliation of being present and still not knowing what to do.
But she stays.
Not beautifully.
Not confidently.
Not as the mother from a film who knows the perfect sentence at the perfect time.
She just stays until the whistle.
After the game, he comes over and says:
You came.
She says:
Yes.
Then:
I saw you.
That is not a speech.
It is not forgiveness.
It is not repair.
But sometimes being seen is the first thing that survives the damage.
And sometimes love is not dramatic.
Sometimes it is a person sitting through the whole game, even when they feel useless.
Especially then.
