The Life of People Who Constantly Hear, ‘Practise What You Preach’

A cop turns on the lights and talks into the speaker. “Driver, pull over the vehicle, don’t go any further” The car slows down and moves to the shoulder. The cop walks over, papers tucked inside his folder.

“Did you know why I pulled you over?” The cop asks quietly “No, officer,” says the driver, “You’re the expert, not me.” “You were doing a sixty in a forty”, he says, writing on his clipboard. “Roads aren’t racetracks — these rules cannot be explored. ”

“That’s how it is for you, isn’t it?” The driver says, scoffing. “Speeding’s a crime unless it’s your lot doing it, But when it comes to the common man, like me It’s suddenly a court date and a threat of a fee.”

The cop looks up from his clipboard, shocked at the outburst. “Sir, these emergencies require us to act quickly — safety comes first. If it weren’t for the suspects treating our city like a racetrack, I wouldn’t have to bend the laws to keep the danger back.”

“The badge excuses what you do,” says the driver with a sneer, “Disregard property and protocol, argue it’s part of your career. Don’t be a hypocrite, follow your own advice; Roads are not racetracks; by your laws, abide.”

“If everyone followed the laws to the letter,” the cop says, irritated. “I wouldn’t have to do this, this is not up to be debated, The reason why this city is safe is not because we’re unrestrained, But because in dire situations, some rigid rules cannot remain.”

“Funny how situations excuse everything you do,” he laughs. “I bet if I gave you a dime, you’d act like we never crossed paths. This system is a mess because of people like you, Who says the law grows flexible when it’s needed for you?”

“And as for situations, ask me if mine was worth the risk, A call came from my boy’s school, and now I must be brisk. He was inside when bullets were flying, trapped among that mob I need to see if my child is safe when you failed to do your job!”

The pen fell from the cop’s hands, and he was standing still Realising he might have been too harsh, against his better will. “Sir, I’ll let you go this once,” he said, “Drive safe, and please be careful, I hope your boy comes home tonight,” he turns back, quiet and prayerful.

The driver moves onward, praying to everyone he knows That fate had spared his child from death nobody chose The cop rushes back to the station to assist in the rescue. And later hears the roll call end, thanking God they pulled through.
