When You Know Community Matters, But Don’t Know How to Belong

Community building is important. That’s a lesson I learned recently, not from a book, not from advice, but from experience that felt a little too real.

You can be skilled. You can be aware. You can even present well and make people listen.

But if no one knows you, it often doesn’t matter.

Unless you are exceptionally talented, the kind that cannot be ignored, you risk being overlooked.

Not because you lack ability, but because you lack visibility.

And for someone like me, connection isn’t easy.

I don’t network naturally. I don’t talk about contacts. I listen more than I speak.

I connect through emotions, not through introductions.

But in many spaces, that kind of connection isn’t enough.

People know people. Names circulate before work is even seen.

And somewhere in between, you start questioning yourself.

Not because you’re not good, but because you’re not known.

I’ve realized something simple.

It’s not just about being capable. It’s about being remembered.

I don’t need to become someone else. But I can’t stay invisible either.

Maybe it starts small. Speaking a little more. Staying a little longer. Showing up, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Because talent in silence doesn’t fail, it just waits.

And I don’t want to keep waiting.
