I walked outside and noticed there was frost on the pumpkin.
“Frost on the pumpkin?” she asked with dismay.
And it was May. It is May.
Not May Day or Mayday or May the 4th Be With You, but it is May today and every other day this month. May, in other words, is going to be in the area all month long. That could be a song. You might want to sing along.
And so could this be a song, I guess:
The pumpkin is dead, and even though it’s shaped like a head, a shrunken head all shriveled and wrinkly, it’s still more red…than orange.
Or at least a reddish orange.
Witchiepoo is the only one I ever knew that found a word to rhyme with orange. Her doing so was incompatible with what I learned in the rhyming and poetry section of my Junior High/Middle School Language Arts class, but it made that episode of HR Pufnstuf a complete blast.

Oranges smoranges! Who said?
Oranges poranges! Who said?
There ain’t no rhyme for oranges!
I never said that. All I said was there was frost on the pumpkin.
I may have to pull that thing out of the garden one of these days, I guess.
