Who Was Saint Euplius?

In the 3rd or 4th century, when Christianity was still forbidden and believers were hunted, Euplius served as a deacon in Catania’s early church. His mission was simple — to carry the word of the Gospel. Yet in those times, that word could mean death.

Legend says that Euplius boldly entered the praetorium carrying a copy of the Gospels and began to preach before Roman officials. He was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to die.

When the sword finally fell, the sky over Catania darkened. A sudden storm broke out — as if the heavens themselves wept for him.

Thus, Euplius became a symbol of faith without fear, a saint of light in a time of darkness.

The Rise — and Fall — of His Church

Soon after his martyrdom, the people of Catania built a small underground chapel on the site of his death — a secret sanctuary where the persecuted gathered to pray.

Centuries passed. The world changed. The memory of Euplius faded — until, in the 16th century, a new church was built above the ancient crypt. By 1548, it had become a place of pilgrimage and reverence, later entrusted to the Franciscan order.
