In the volatile terrain of India’s Red Corridor and the insurgency-affected pockets of the Northeast, few names command the kind of respect — and fear — that Prakash Ranjan Mishra does. A quiet professional and a frontline tactician, Mishra has carved a reputation not through noise, but through sheer courage and operational brilliance. As of Republic Day 2023, he holds the rare distinction of being the most decorated officer in the history of India’s Central Armed Police Forces, with eight Police Medals for Gallantry, and a Shaurya Chakra — one of India’s highest peacetime military honors.

Beginnings in Uniform

Mishra joined the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in 1997, initially as a Sub-Inspector. From the start, he demonstrated a unique blend of discipline, sharp tactical instinct, and nerves of steel. In 2002, he was inducted as an Assistant Commandant, the turning point that set him on a course toward India’s most dangerous combat zones.

When the elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) was formed in 2009 to fight Maoist insurgency, Mishra didn’t hesitate. He volunteered.

Operation Chatra: Blood and Bravery

The defining moment of his career came in September 2012, during Operation Chatra in Jharkhand.

Acting on intel about the movement of a top Maoist commander, Mishra led a 24-member CoBRA team into the dense forests of Chatra district. As the team closed in, they were met with intense gunfire. A bullet tore through Mishra’s shoulder. Then another. And another.

Five bullets pierced his body.

And yet, refusing evacuation, he continued to command, guide, and fight until the operation was complete. His actions that day led to the elimination of a high-value Maoist leader and ensured zero casualties on the government side.

For this unprecedented courage, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award.

Khunti Encounter: The 8th Gallantry Medal

Fast-forward to December 2020, and Mishra — now a Second-in-Command — was leading another high-stakes operation, this time in Khunti, Jharkhand. The target was a Maoist commander responsible for over 150 serious crimes, from ambushes to extortion.

The joint CRPF–Jharkhand Police team neutralized the threat with surgical precision. Mishra was again recognized, and this gallantry medal brought his total to eight PMGs — a record in Indian CAPF history.

“We move in silence, we strike with clarity. Our job is to ensure others live without fear,” Mishra once said in a rare interview.

Beyond Medals: Fearless, Formidable, Forgotten Hero

Mishra’s influence extends far beyond citations. His operations have saved lives, dismantled extremist networks, and restored faith in security forces in regions long abandoned to insurgency.

• He’s credited with neutralizing over 100 Maoists across Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
• He’s survived multiple bullet injuries and continues to serve in active combat roles.
• His story is now part of CRPF lore. A graphic e-comic titled “Shoorveer Prakash” was released to commemorate his battlefield heroism and to inspire future officers.

A Living Symbol of Duty

In an era where most officers prefer strategic desks and high-command roles, Mishra continues to lead from the front. In his words:

“If you’re not leading from the front, you’re not leading at all.”
