Introduction
Heuristic evaluation is a usability inspection method in which an interface is analyzed against established design principles. One widely used framework is Nielsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics, which provide guidelines for evaluating how well a system supports human cognition and interaction. This paper applies selected heuristics to evaluate CAMU, a student-facing academic portal, from a cognitive perspective. As a system used for high stakes academic tasks such as fee payment, attendance tracking, and academic record access, CAMU requires reliability, clarity, and consistent feedback. The following analysis identifies usability gaps that may increase cognitive load and disrupt user experience.
Visibility of System Status
One significant usability concern relates to delayed system feedback during financial transactions. After completing a fee payment, the system does not immediately generate a receipt or confirmation. Instead, confirmation may appear several minutes later. During this delay, users are left uncertain about whether the transaction was successful. From a cognitive perspective, timely feedback is essential for reducing uncertainty and maintaining user confidence. When confirmation is delayed, users experience increased cognitive load as they mentally evaluate whether to refresh the page, attempt the payment again, or wait. In high-stakes interactions such as financial transactions, immediate feedback is critical to support trust and reduce anxiety. The absence of clear, real-time system status weakens the feedback loop between user action and system response.
Error Prevention and Recovery
Another usability issue involves unexpected logouts and login-related difficulties. Users may be logged out without warning, disrupting ongoing tasks. Additionally, login failures may not clearly indicate whether the issue stems from incorrect credentials, session expiration, or system instability. Unexpected interruptions disrupt task continuity and require users to reconstruct their previous context upon re-entry. This increases cognitive effort and frustration. Systems designed for academic use should prioritize session stability and provide clear explanations when interruptions occur.
Help Users Recognize and Recover from Errors
CAMU occasionally displays error messages without clear instructions for recovery. Generic or vague error messages force users to interpret the problem independently, often without actionable guidance. Ambiguous errors increase mental effort and decision uncertainty. Instead of directing users toward a solution, the system shifts the burden of problem-solving onto them. Effective error communication should clearly explain what occurred and provide specific next steps.
Consistency and System Reliability
Reports of unresponsive buttons and inconsistent system behaviour suggest violations of reliability principles. When a user clicks a button and receives no visible response, the system fails to confirm whether the action has been registered. This breaks the expected cause and effect relationship between user input and system output. Predictable feedback is essential for maintaining a stable mental model of how the system works. Inconsistent responses reduce trust and increase cognitive strain, particularly in systems that manage academic and financial information.
Reflection
Evaluating CAMU through usability heuristics reveals how interface design decisions directly influence cognitive load and user confidence. As a Computer Science student, I have primarily approached systems from a technical perspective. Applying a cognitive framework shifts the focus toward how humans interpret and respond to system behaviour. Studying cognitive science would allow me to further investigate how structured feedback and error prevention strategies can reduce cognitive strain in essential digital systems.
