Understanding Why Fine Powders Overwhelm Ultrasonic Screening

Ultrasonic screening is widely used in powder processing because it keeps screens open and helps break apart small clumps. But once powders get below roughly 44 microns, a new set of challenges appears that many operators do not expect.

Fine particles have higher surface energy and stronger powder-to-metal interactions. They cling to the mesh surface the moment they touch it. When this happens, the ultrasonic system must operate continuously to keep the mesh clear. The result is rapid heat buildup, reduced efficiency, and screens that wear faster than expected.

At the same time, the powder does not receive enough vertical motion to move through the mesh. The particles remain in place, forming a dense layer that further impedes separation. This is why ultrasonic sieves seem to work perfectly at 74 microns and larger sizes but suddenly fail when the specification tightens.

Screening machines built for fine separations use a very different movement pattern. They apply strong vertical acceleration so the powder never settles into a static layer. By continuously lifting and redistributing the material, these machines maintain open mesh conditions and allow particles to approach the openings from more angles.
