How to Configure A VPN in Windows Server 2008 Using A Single LAN Card

Introduction

In this post, I will show you How to Configure A VPN in Windows Server 2008 Using A Single LAN Card.

Requirements

• Windows Server 2008 (Domain Controller)
• Windows 7 (Domain Joined)
• DHCP Server with Active Scope
• Windows Firewall Disabled (Both sides)

Installing Routing and Remote Access Services Role.

To install Routing and Remote Access Services Role, follow the below mentioned steps:

• Open Server Manager.
• Click on Roles.
• On the Roles Summary Page, Click on Add Roles Link. The Add Roles Wizard Appears.
• On the Before You Begin Page, click on Next.
• On the Select Server Roles Page, Tick on Network Policy and Access Services and click on Next.
• On the Network Policy and Access Services Role Page, click on Next.
• On the Select Role Services, Tick on Routing and Remote Access Services and click on Next.
• On the Confirm Installation Page, click on Install.
• On the Installation Progress Page, wait for the installation to finish.
• Click on Close to finish the installation and exit the wizard.

Configure Routing and Remote Access Services Role

To Configure Routing and Remote Access Services Role, follow the below mentioned steps:

• Open Server Manager.
• Click on Roles.
• Click on Network Policy and Access Services Role and select Routing and Remote Access Services Role.
• Right click the Routing and Remote Access Services Role and choose Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access. Routing and Remote Access Server Setup wizard will appear on your screen.
• On the Welcome to the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Role Wizard Page, click on Next.
• On the Configuration Page, choose Custom Configuration Radio Button and click on Next.
• On the Custom Configuration Page, Tick on VPN Access and click on Next.
• On the Completing the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard, click on Finish Button. A prompt will appear to Start the Routing and Remote Access Service, click on Start Service.
• Click on Finish Button to close the Wizard.

Configuring Dial-in Access on Administrator Account

To Configure Dial-in Access on Administrator Account, follow the below mentioned steps:

• Click on Start Button.
• Search for Active Directory Users and Computers.
• After opening, Active Directory Users and Computers, click on Users Container.
• On the Right-pane, find the Administrator Account.
• Right-click the Administrator Account and choose properties.
• Go to the Dial-in tab and under Network Access Permission, Click on Allow Access.
• Click on OK to close the window.

Setting Up VPN Connection on Client Machine.

To set up VPN connection on client machine, perform the following steps:

• Click on Start
• Click on Control Panel.
• Click on Network and Sharing Center.
• Under change your networking settings, click on Setup a connection or Network. The Setup a Connection or Network Wizard appears.
• On the Choose a Network option page choose connect to a Workplace option and click on Next.
• On the How do you want to Connect page, choose Use my Internet Connection (VPN) option and click on Next.
• On the Connect to a Workplace page, Choose I’ll set up an Internet Connection Later.
• On the Connect to a Workplace page, Type the IP Address of the Server in the text box corresponds to Internet Address and click on Next.
• On the Type your Username and Password Page, Type the username as Administrator and Password of the Administrator account of your Windows Server on which you have applied Dial-in Settings on the previous paragraph and click on Create.
• The connection is ready to use Page appears, click on close button.

Accessing the VPN Connection

To Access the VPN Connection, follow the below mentioned steps:

• Click on Start
• Click on Control Panel.
• Click on Network and Sharing Center.
• Click on Change Adapter Settings.
• You will see the VPN connection which is currently disconnected.

Changing the Properties of VPN Connection

To change the properties of VPN connection, follow the below mentioned steps:

• Right click the VPN connection and choose properties.
• On the VPN Connection Properties Dialog Box, Click on Options tab.
• Under the Type of VPN, Choose Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and click on OK.

Connecting to the VPN Server

To connect to the VPN Server, follow the below mentioned steps:

• Double click the VPN Connection.
• A Connect VPN Connection Dialog box will appear.
• Type the password of your Administrator Account i.e configured on the Server.
• Click on Connect Button.
• If everything works fine, you will see the connection getting established.

Verifying IP Addressing

To verify the IP you got from VPN Server, perform the below mentioned steps:

• Click on Start.
• Type cmd and press enter.
• Type ipconfig/all.
• Under the PPP Adapter VPN Connection, see the IP which you have got and the default gateway.
