SIBLINGS OF THE HEART

The four siblings walked slowly into the house after their mother’s cremation. Just a year earlier, they had lost their father.

“She left a letter and this box for you,” said their aunt softly.

Ajit, the oldest, picked up the box. Shruti, the youngest, opened the letter to read.

My dear children,

I am writing this letter to tell you that we are a unique family.

You would be shocked to know that all of you are adopted. It is not blood that binds us, but your parents’ love.

I had been married for nearly two years when there was a massive fire in the building, and many people died, leaving several orphaned children. Most of them were adopted by their relatives, but no one came forward for the four of you.

Your father and I decided to adopt all of you. Though it was very tough at first, your father took two jobs, and I had to work nights and weekends to provide for all of us. When I would see your happy faces, I knew I had made the right choice. Over time, it was wonderful to see you grow into beautiful people.

Always be there for each other.

Ajit sat heavily and opened the box. Out came information about their families and pictures of their siblings and dead parents. Everybody got excited, pulling out names and addresses to reclaim their relatives.

That day, their lives changed, yet they would always remain their mother’s children, siblings of the heart.
