Fired HPD Officer Ashley Gonzalez Under Review as Texas Prosecutors Reevaluate 175 Criminal Cases

Shortly after Houston Police fired Ashley Gonzalez, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office issued approximately 175 Brady notices connected to cases in which Gonzalez was involved.

This development was highlighted both in a public Instagram statement by civil rights advocate Dr. Candice Matthews and new reports from ABC13 Houston, which confirmed the review.

A Brady notice does not overturn a conviction. Instead, it alerts defense attorneys to information that may affect the credibility of a witness or the fairness of a prosecution. This is supposed to be a judicial safeguard meant to protect defendants when an officer’s bias, misconduct, or dishonesty is revealed.

Dr. Matthews emphasized that “every person is entitled to due process under the law,” and that questions about an officer’s credibility must be reviewed carefully. She also noted that public confidence in the criminal justice system depends on accountability at every level. Her statement framed the Brady notices as both a legal necessity and a direct result of sustained community activism: “Accountability strengthens public trust”.

This development follows Gonzalez’s firing after her viral racist Instagram rant. In the video, Gonzalez repeatedly used the N-word, mocked slavery, and alluded to altercations with Black people on and off duty. Her termination was confirmed by FOX 26 Houston, KPRC, Houston Public Media, and KHOU 11.

Community activists — including Dr. Matthews and Quanell X — have consistently demanded:

• A full review of Gonzalez’s police history
• Examination of her Marine Corps record
• Release of internal communications
• Investigation into arrest records, use‑of‑force reports, and misconduct complaints
• Permanent revocation of her TCOLE certification

These demands have only intensified with the Brady notices.

Ashley Gonzalez’ post was disturbing and the community demands are warranted and needed. In a previous article, the Breonna Taylor case remains one of the clearest examples of how officers involved highly problematic cases can quietly transfer and remain in law enforcement.

According to congressional testimony and federal records: while other officers involved in the case were prosecuted, Myles Cosgrove — the officer who fired the fatal shot to Breonna Taylor was never charged with her death, kept his police certification, and was later rehired in another town. This phenomenon, is referred to as “wandering cops,” persists because there is no national system or registry preventing officers with histories of misconduct from moving between local jurisdictions or law enforcement agencies across the country.

If the system allowed the officer who killed Breonna Taylor to walk away with a clean record and get another job, activists warn that Gonzalez could attempt the same — especially since she is reportedly planning to appeal her firing.

Each of the 175 cases will now be reviewed individually to determine if Ashley Gonzalez’s involvement compromised fairness or violated constitutional rights. Reports say the DA’s office has stated that these reviews will proceed case by case, based on the facts and merits of each situation.

Dr. Matthews urged the community to stay engaged: “This is how you get things done.”

I wonder is the Marines investigating her service being she so proudly proclaimed that her racist rant reminded her of her time in service.
