How Can You Get Started Writing For Magazines?

For many, writing for magazines is the dream. However, it can be very daunting when you are first starting out.

You should start by thinking about some of the magazines that you read on a regular basis. You are already familiar with them. You may also want to try some local magazines because they can be easier to be published in. There is less competition, so it might be a good place to start.

Study these magazines. What do they typically write about? What topics are the most common? You may want to think about an angle that they haven’t done yet.

It is really important to start writing about what you know. It is a lot easier to write about what you know or things you are going through (or have gone through). These require less research and will read much better.

Then, start pitching to magazines. Write carefully crafted query letters and see if you get any bites.
