In our own land, we have stories of the Keibu keioiba, a creature with the head of a tiger and the body of a man.

In 2018, several districts across Manipur reported nighttime attacks on livestock by a mysterious unidentified creature. Residents from areas including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur claimed that chickens, ducks, pigs, goats, and other domestic animals were being killed during the night under strange circumstances.

The reports indicated that carcasses of animals were found mutilated, with intestines reportedly missing, strange paw marks near homes, sighting sof shadowy figures at night, hearing disturbing sounds at night, and rumors spread rapidly through Facebook and WhatsApp. The mystery also became linked with local folklore and stories of night creatures common in Manipuri traditions, which further intensified speculation among the public.

People stayed indoors at night and kept lights on because of panic over the unknown predator.

The Manipur Forest Department and wildlife authorities launched investigations, even bringing experts from the Wildlife Institute of India to study the incidents. Cages and monitoring systems were placed in affected areas to catch the animal.

Nothing was ever found from that investigation, and the attacks ceased after the placement of cages and monitoring systems, and that itself is a mystery. It was as if the creature was intelligent, for if it had been wild dogs, wolves or other predators, the attacks wouldn’t have ceased so suddenly, and it would definitely have been caught.

Many such stories emerged from civilisations far apart and separated by oceans and countries.

Maybe these creatures really existed in humanity’s ancient past? We will never know.

Modern science has explained many creatures once thought mythical. Giant squids, gorillas (initially thought to be a chimaera), and okapis were all dismissed as legends before being officially discovered.

This leaves us with the possibility that perhaps somewhere in remote forests, beneath oceans, or even in polar ice, unknown creatures might still be surviving undiscovered.

The world is still a mysterious place, and there are so many things we still do not understand. Just because we do not understand, we cannot dismiss all stories as nonsense!
