Who the Garifuna Are

The Garifuna are descendants of West African and Indigenous Caribbean peoples, and their culture, language, music and dance were recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Hopkins is widely seen as the cultural heart of Garifuna life in Belize, with drumming most evenings and lessons from village musicians.

Food Worth Travelling For

The signature dish is hudut, a fragrant fish stew in coconut broth served with mashed plantain, alongside cassava bread called ereba. Family kitchens and beach bars serve fresh fish and Belizean staples at prices far below resort towns.

The Beach and the Reef

Hopkins has a long, walkable beach that rarely feels crowded. Offshore lies the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day trips run to South Water Caye Marine Reserve for snorkelling and diving.
