The Ten-Minute Sketch Rule

From perfection paralysis to honest momentum, one short timer at a time

In architecture school, I had a pattern: I would spend 40 minutes preparing to start a sketch and 5 minutes actually sketching.

New sheet. Correct scale. Better pen. Better idea. Better mood.

By the time everything was “ready,” the energy was gone.

What changed me was a simple studio constraint: make three sketches in ten minutes each, no erasing, no restarting.

The first attempts were messy. Lines overlapped. Proportions drifted. But something else improved quickly: decision speed.

When the clock is visible, you stop negotiating with yourself.

You choose. You commit. You move.

I still use this rule in product work and writing. If I am stuck, I time-box the first draft to ten minutes. Not to finish well, but to begin honestly.

Perfection delays learning. Volume creates it.

Ten minutes is short enough to start and long enough to reveal what you actually think.

When you lower the cost of a first version, you get more first versions. That is where quality begins.

I don’t treat the ten-minute version as final. I treat it as the door.
