Why New YouTube Features Won’t Fix a Weak Content Strategy

Every few months YouTube releases a new feature and marketers rush to figure out how to use it. AI tools. Algorithm updates. New creative features. Better analytics. The excitement makes sense. New tools can create new opportunities. But when I look at most eCommerce YouTube channels, I rarely see a tool problem. What I usually see is a topic selection problem. The channel is producing content consistently, but most of that content sits at the awareness stage while the stages closest to a buying decision are almost completely empty.

Take YouTube’s new AI-powered inspiration tools. They can help generate ideas, titles, thumbnails, and outlines faster. That’s useful. The problem is that AI can’t tell you which buyer questions actually matter. If your content calendar is already filled with awareness topics, generating more awareness topics isn’t necessarily progress. A strong buyer intent content strategy starts by understanding what buyers are trying to figure out and how close they are to taking action. That’s not something an AI tool can decide for you.

The same idea applies to algorithm updates. A lot of businesses spend time trying to understand how the algorithm works when they should be spending more time understanding how buyers think. The strongest YouTube topic selection process doesn’t start with YouTube. It starts with sales calls, customer questions, support conversations, and product page FAQs. Those are often the places where decision-stage content opportunities are hiding. The brands that win aren’t always the ones with the best production or the newest tools. They’re usually the ones creating content that aligns with buyer intent.

That’s why I think businesses should treat platform updates as enhancements, not strategy. The strategy comes first. The strategy is deciding what questions deserve content and what stage of the buyer journey you’re serving. Once that’s clear, new features become useful accelerators. Without that clarity, they’re often just helping you create more content that wasn’t aligned with the buyer in the first place. And for many Shopify and Shopify Plus brands, that’s the real opportunity sitting in front of them
