Gratitude Is Everything
Most people remember the extraordinary days, and feel deeply grateful for the same, i.e. weddings, festivals, victories, grand celebrations. But as I grow older, I realise the real strength of my life came from the days when nothing happened. The ordinary ones. The mornings that began with a simple cup of tea, the rustle of a newspaper, and the sunlight claiming a soft corner of my room. The sunlight, I would claim my own in winters. The evenings when the house wasn’t buzzing with guests or events , just quiet conversations, a plate of home-cooked French fries, and the calm knowledge that everyone I love is safe.
At seventy four, when I look back, I don’t just see milestones. I see endless strings of small, uneventful days that quietly stitched my life together.
The days when my daughters were little and sat beside me doing homework. The days when my grandchildren played around me without any agenda except joy. (Except when pulling my hair out of fun) The days when my wife cooked something simple and delicious, and we didn’t need a festival to feel grateful. The days when health was normal, routine was predictable, and I went about life without thinking too much.
Those days didn’t make noise. But they held me in place.
We don’t realise it, but ordinary days are life’s very reliable companions. They don’t demand or seek attention, yet they offer so much, stability, peace, and grounding. If extraordinary events are fireworks, ordinary days are the sky that makes space for them.
And today, I find myself profoundly grateful for them.
For the mornings that don’t rush me. For the sunlight that arrives without invitation. For the familiar walls of my home. For the tea that warms more than my hands. For routine — that soft, loyal friend of every age.
In a world that teaches us to chase something new, I’m thankful for the comfort of what stayed the same, unchanged.
Because I find the following truth very plain and simple: Ordinary days raised me far more than extraordinary ones ever did.
If gratitude has taught me anything, it is this: peaceful days are not empty — they are full of quiet grace. And sometimes, the greatest gift life gives us is a day where nothing goes wrong.
