The Illusion of Equal Footing

I grew up believing everyone was dealt the same deck of cards…that opportunity was universal, that character mattered more than color, that the playing field was level. I truly thought people didn’t see me differently…until they did.

It only takes a few moments to shatter that belief: being called the n‑word with the hard ‑ER, being reduced to “boy,” being told I was hired as a token. Those moments don’t fade. They reshape how you understand the world. For years, I held onto the hope that we were inching toward Dr. King’s dream. Yet here we are in 2026, still struggling to put the “United” in United States.

These are the conversations people avoid…the ones they’d rather you “get over” because they’ve never walked in the shoes they’re dismissing. But silence doesn’t erase reality.

Fast‑forward thirty years. I’ve lived things many wouldn’t believe: a double‑barrel shotgun in my face from the KKK, being quietly passed over for leadership roles I earned, being labeled an “oppressed Black man” for suggesting that a water‑rainbow fire truck wasn’t the right decision to honor a Juneteenth 5K run.

These aren’t random stories. They’re part of a pattern one too many still refuse to acknowledge.

Meanwhile, social media has turned into a battlefield of left vs right, red vs blue, outrage vs outrage. And the real question gets buried: What does it take for us to choose each other? Not politically. Not performatively. But humanly.

Every step back has been a setback, yes, but also a reminder. Progress doesn’t come with time. It comes with intention.

So when do we become the “we” we keep talking about?

When do we stop debating who deserves humanity and start acting like we all do?

That’s the America I’m still holding space for.

Not perfect. Not colorblind. Just honest and finally willing to grow…together.
