Read. Rise. Rule.
Once, there was a monastery, tucked away in the lofty mountains of the Alpes, where lived a rather short-tempered and impatient disciple. One day, the frustrated disciple walks into her mentor’s room. She questions furiously why she forgets everything she reads. She explained that it was a waste of time.
The wise mentor simply smiled to himself. He handed his fed-up disciple a strainer, coated with mud and debris and asked her to fetch water using it as her apparatus. The disciple was perplexed, but accustomed to her mentor’s weird demands, agrees. She rushes to the pond, dips the strainer in the clear blue pond nd collects water. She returns hastily to her master to have proven that she had completed the task, but by the time she presents the strainer, the water had seeped away. She rushes back to the pond nd repats the enduring process to complete the task but in vain.
Tired and dejected, the disciple falls before the mentor and wails in despair of how it was impossible. The calm teacher points out to her how her repeated failed attempts of collecting water from the strainer had cleaned the soiled thing. The old man explains how reading does the same for the human soul. A person may not remember what he/she/they have read but the soul and mind will never forget the impact of the intellect they’d gain.
Quoting Richard Steele, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”.
