You’re working hard. Your diary is full, you tick things off, there’s always something on. And yet nothing seems to be changing. You can’t quite put your finger on why.

This isn’t about effort. You’re not lazy, you’re not taking it easy. But there’s a difference between being busy and moving forward, and it’s not enough just to notice.

busyness as a strategy.

Busyness can be a way of managing anxiety. When you’re creating tasks, staying visible, filling your hours, you feel like you’re working. Your day-to-day fear stays at a manageable level. The problem is that managing fear this way is a short-term strategy. It pushes the real problem further down the road, and when you can’t push it any further, it’s become bigger and harder to deal with than it would have been.

I gave myself client targets for months. End of month, end of quarter, then no target at all because the numbers felt arbitrary. I didn’t have conversion data, didn’t know what each channel would produce. But no target didn’t help either, because the target wasn’t the real problem. The problem was that I was busy without any of that activity being aimed at anything specific. I was visible. I was using my time. I just wasn’t moving forward.

staying busy.

Social media is an easy place to be busy without doing much. Posting to be visible rather than posting with something to say to someone specific. A website that exists rather than one that works. Networking is less obvious, but one two-hour event can account for a whole day, and the connections made might feel good in the room without being the right ones. You know in your gut when they are and when they aren’t.

It’s not about getting everything right. It’s about paying attention. Asking yourself whether what you’re doing is aimed at something, or just keeping you occupied.

procrasti-learning.

As a lifelong learner who does better with formal study than reading a book, this used to be my biggest obstacle. Wanting to be qualified in everything I spoke about. Not feeling ready until I had the certificate. It was training disguised as confidence-building, which was also procrastination in disguise.

Now I keep a list. Training I want to do, qualifications I want to study for. When something new comes up, I add it to the list rather than signing up. Most of it stays on the list. Because most of it I don’t really need.

stop being busy.

The difference between busy and productive is knowing what a task is for. Before you start, ask yourself what the outcome will be. Be honest. Is what you’re doing moving something forward, or just making you feel like it is?
