Part 3 , I Became My Father Without Noticing the Boots Come Off First
Same words. Same tone. Just a different man standing in the doorway.
The ritual, the return, and the moment I heard his voice come out of my mouth.
The boots come off first. Then the work clothes. Then the shower hot water, long enough to wash the day off your skin. After that, either the controller or the meditation mat, depending on what the day took from me. That's my ritual. My buffer zone. The small ceremony that separates who I have to be out there from who I actually am in here. Most fathers have one, even if they've never named it.
That's how I come back to myself. And I think about it now… my father had his own version of this. Different routine, same silence. Same need to return to himself before stepping fully back into the house. But some evenings, the ritual gets interrupted in the best possible way.
You hear movement at the door. And there she is your wife, standing in the doorway, carrying your daughter. She leans in for a welcome kiss. And before you can even fully process the moment, your daughter sees you.
Her whole face changes eyes lighting up like she's been waiting all day for that exact moment.
She stretches her arms toward you, reaching, bouncing, grabbing onto whatever support she can find just moving, just alive, just completely overcome with the fact that papa is home. That giggling laugh. That full-body dance that babies do when they can't contain their joy.
In that moment, the workday doesn't exist anymore. It feels like a new world. A new place. Like everything that drained you simply evaporates. And then "No. No. No. Reyna Leona. Don't do that." It comes out before you even think it.
Because a child's curiosity has no boundaries. Today's adventure might be a crayon. Tomorrow, the TV remote. Yesterday it was something you'd rather not describe. And just like that I hear it. Not my voice. Not entirely. "No, boy. Don't do that." Same words. Same tone. Just a different man standing in the doorway.
You learn quickly that it's not always about the words. A baby doesn't fully understand language yet. They own the moment completely. They take over the room without asking and somehow, you let them. So you find yourself negotiating. "No no no, your majesty. In my experience, that is not food. I strongly advise against it if you wish to keep me enrolled as your father for many more years, your highness, please put that down."
Today it was the water beads from the vase on the table. Colorful. Squishy. Absolutely fascinating to a baby. Absolutely terrifying to a father.
And then as if granting me a royal favour she let them go. She looked up at me and smiled. I laughed. She laughed. And somewhere, I think my father laughed too like he already knew this day would come.
