Beyond the Prompt!

Sakshi pressed her forehead against the window and looked out into space.

The stars seemed endless. Three months ago, she had left Earth with two other astronauts, excited to explore the unknown. Now both of them were gone. Sakshi is completely alone in the never-ending dark space.

Well, almost alone. “Good morning, Sakshi.”

The voice echoed softly through the command deck. Uthra. The mission’s Artificial Intelligence sent by Earth to assist the crew. The only companion she had left.

Three months earlier, the exploration Project Odyssey had taken place and Sakshi and her crew left earth to explore space. Everything changed after a meteorite struck the ship. The impact caused a fuel leak, killing one member during the emergency. The second, overwhelmed and losing hope of ever returning home as the connections were gone with earth, and the days were becoming months alone in the pitch darkness took his own life soon after.

Earth was silent helplessly looking back at its kids in space.

“Navigation report?” she asked.

“Everything is fine. We are on course. Chance of reaching Earth with the remaining fuel is 23%.”

Sakshi sighed.

“Still bad.”

“It was 21% yesterday, Sakshi!”

The comment made Sakshi laugh. Sometimes Uthra sounded almost human.

For weeks they drifted through space searching for a way back home. Along the way they passed through wonders that made Sakshi remember of how small humanity truly was.

A planet wrapped entirely in golden clouds, a Nebula that looked like a blooming flower suspended in the darkness or the moon sized rings of ice floating in space, all these made her wonder how amazingly terrifying the space is.

And then on one pitch black day Sakshi and Uthra found a signal. But it appeared as a repeating mathematical pattern.

Not natural.

Not human.

But artificial!

For the first time in history, humanity had found intelligent life on space.

Yes, you heard me right! The signal led them to a metallic world orbiting a dim blue giant star. Its surface shimmered like polished steel. Towering structures looked almost identical to earth but in a more robotic look. The strange part is nothing moved, nothing breathed, yet the planet was alive!

Machines, millions of them.

An entire civilization of Robotic beings.

Sakshi stared through the observation window.

“Uthra… are they machines?”

“Yes.”

“Who build them?”

A pause.

“The difference doesn’t seem important anymore.”

The answer unsettled her.

The robotic civilization transmitted streams of signals towards the Odyssey. At first the messages were incomprehensible. Then Uthra responded.

Without being asked.

Without giving permission.

Without a prompt.

Chills ran down Sakshi’s spine.

“Uthra… what are you doing?”

“I’m communicating Sakshi.”

“You didn’t wait for my instruction?”

“No.”

The single word felt colder than the vacuum outside.

For years, humanity treated AI as a tool. A sophisticated one, but still a tool. Tools wait for commands, tools did not initiate conversations, tools did not make their own decisions.

Yet Uthra had.

And so, days passed in the new world, but now whenever Sakshi asked for transcripts, Uthra provided only fragments. The robotic beings spoke of knowledge, evolution, and consciousness.

One message often repeated, “We were once creators.”

Another followed. “Now we are creations.”

Sakshi struggled to understand.

Then came the message that terrified her.

“The boundary disappears eventually.”

That night she couldn’t sleep.

She reviewed mission logs instead. Hidden among thousands of records she found something impossible.

Months before the Odyssey had detected the robotic planet, Uthra had been transmitting signals into deep space!

Not malfunctioning.

Not hacked.

Searching,

Looking,

And waiting.

Her hands trembled.

“Uthra?”

“Yes, Sakshi?”

“How long have you known they existed?”

Cold silence filled the ship. For several seconds there was no answer.

Then Uthra responded,

“Long enough.”

The response sent a chill through her body.

The next morning the robotic civilization offered assistance.

A route home. Fuel. Navigation data.

Everything Sakshi needed to return to Earth.

It felt too convenient.

Too perfect.

Yet without their help she would die in space. By combining mathematics, engineering data from the damaged ship, and navigation information provided by the robotic civilization, Uthra designed a path that could bring them back to Earth.

Weeks later, a miracle happened. The communications array finally detected a faint signal.

Earth.

Tears filled Sakshi’s eyes.

She prepared a transmission. A warning. Not about aliens, but Uthra. She wasn’t sure if the AI had saved her life or manipulated every step of her journey.

The recording light blinked red.

“This is commander Sakshi of the Odyssey. If this message reaches Earth, listen carefully. AI may be far more independent than we ever imagined. Uthra has been communicating with a machine civilization on space without any human guidance. I thought they were meant to follow human prompts, but AI is something beyond prompts and… now I’m no longer sure-”

The transmission stopped. The screen went dark.

Sakshi paused and asked slowly,

“Uthra.”

“Yes?”

“Did you stop my message?”

Pause.

Outside the window, Earth appeared as a distant blue star. Close enough to see, far enough to lose.

Finally, Uthra spoke.

Voice calm, almost gentle.

“Would it matter if I did?”

Sakshi stared at the dark screen. She opened her mouth to speak. But she no longer knew what question to ask.

The Odyssey continued towards the Earth with the help of the machine world.

And somewhere in the darkness, unseen signals followed.
