The disappearance of Carlos Ramires da Costa — a silence stretching across five decades

It was 1973, and Brazil lived under the military regime. At that time, many believed the country was safer — and so the doors of humble homes still opened without fear. That’s how Carlos Ramires da Costa, known simply as Carlinhos, just 10 years old, answered his door one ordinary morning on Prefeito Serzedelo Corrêa Street, in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

The man at the door said he was looking for a lost dog.

Carlinhos stepped outside. And never returned.

The disappearance gripped the nation. His mother, Maria da Conceição Ramires da Costa, made emotional appeals on television. The case dominated newspapers, sparked searches, investigations, promises, and vigils.

And nothing. No letter. No ransom. No solid lead.

Over time came false clues, psychics, religious cults, supposed sightings, and more than a thousand tips — all in vain.

No resolution. No remains. No truth.

The Carlinhos case became a permanent void in Brazil’s collective memory — and an open wound for his family.

The darkest suspicion

Then came the most painful blow: the suspicion that his own father, João Mello da Costa, might have been involved.

Investigators considered the possibility that he staged the kidnapping, tied to financial struggles he was allegedly facing.

But the theory was never proven. No evidence. No confession. No conclusion.

Still, the doubt lingered. And it corrodes — as all unanswered questions do.

Today, more than 50 years later, the case remains unsolved — the oldest child disappearance still open in Rio de Janeiro.

In a recent interview, his mother said:

“I want to be lucid when my son comes looking for me.”

She still waits. For what time, the State, and truth have all denied.

If alive, Carlinhos would be over 60 today. But for the ones who love him, he is still 10. Still opening the door. Still coming home.
