How safety culture and smartphones built a generation of teens who rarely leave the house

One stat stopped me cold this week. One in ten teens in America can’t leave the house without an adult. Not grounded. Barred, categorically, from walking to a store alone.

Pair it with this: teens spending more time alone in bedrooms, and less time with a friend in the same room, than any generation on record. The bedroom replaced the neighborhood.

Nobody planned it. Safety culture built up over three decades, one reasonable decision at a time, until the unsupervised hour disappeared from adolescence almost entirely. Ask why teens don’t go outside anymore and the honest answer is nobody decided it on purpose.

The phone filled the vacuum. The impact of smartphones on teenage isolation isn’t a willpower problem. It’s what happens when you close the door outside and hand a kid screens instead. Researchers like Jonathan Haidt call it the anxious generation, and the anxious generation and screen time is a real, researchable mechanism, not just a hunch.
