Apple’s design power did not disappear after Jony Ive. It moved deeper into the device.

Johny Srouji is probably the closest thing Apple has to a Jony Ive of hardware architecture: a behind-the-scenes executive whose work shapes the feel, limits, and future direction of Apple’s products. That comparison works only if it is used carefully. Srouji is not the new Ive, and he is not trying to occupy the same cultural space. Ive represented Apple’s visible taste. Srouji represents something quieter and harder to copy: the internal architecture that decides what Apple devices can do before anyone touches the glass.
Apple made that influence explicit when it named Srouji Chief Hardware Officer in April 2026. The move expanded his reach beyond Hardware Technologies and put him over the broader hardware engineering organization. On paper, that sounds like an executive shuffle. Inside Apple, it says something larger about where the company thinks product power now lives.
For a long time, Apple’s public story of product leadership was tied to industrial design. The object came first in the public imagination. The curve of the aluminum, the thinness of the enclosure, the way glass met metal, the feeling that the device had been reduced until nothing extra remained. Jony Ive became the human symbol of that Apple because industrial design was easy to see, easy to photograph, and easy to turn into a story.
Srouji belongs to a different Apple era.
The modern Apple product is still designed from the outside. Nobody buys a MacBook Air, iPhone, Apple Watch, or Vision Pro and thinks the physical form is an afterthought. The object still has to feel right. It still has to survive daily use. It still has to signal Apple before the screen turns on. But the deepest product advantage has moved further into the stack. Battery life, thermal behavior, camera processing, secure enclaves, wireless systems, unified memory, neural engines, and custom silicon now shape the experience as much as the enclosure does.
That is why Srouji’s promotion deserves attention. It marks the point where Apple’s hardware story becomes less about selecting the best available components and more about designing the internal systems that allow the product to exist in the first place.
Apple Silicon is the clearest example. Before the transition, the Mac was partly bound to Intel’s pace, power profile, and product roadmap. Apple could still make excellent Macs, but it had to build around someone else’s silicon schedule. Once Apple moved the Mac to its own chips, the product line changed character. The MacBook Air could become fanless without feeling weak. The MacBook Pro could become fast, quiet, and efficient without turning into a thermal compromise. The Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro could all be pulled into a more coherent hardware story.
That shift did not happen because Apple simply replaced one processor with another. It happened because the company had spent years building the muscle to design chips, operating systems, batteries, displays, enclosures, and software frameworks as parts of one system. Srouji’s work helped make that system credible.
John Ternus belongs in the same conversation, but his role is different. If Srouji represents the architecture inside the machine, Ternus represents the product-hardware discipline that turns that architecture into devices people can actually buy. He has been close to the shipping side of Apple hardware: the choices around form factor, thermals, reliability, materials, ports, displays, and the compromises that separate a prototype from a product. Srouji helps define what the hardware platform can become. Ternus helps decide how that platform shows up in the hand, on the desk, and in the lineup.
That pairing may say more about Apple’s future than either executive does alone. Apple’s next chapter is not being handed to a pure software leader or a services executive. It is being shaped by hardware people at a time when hardware is becoming harder to separate from software, AI, supply chain, privacy, and custom silicon.
That is the part easy Apple commentary can miss. Apple is often described as late to AI, cautious with new categories, and too dependent on the iPhone. Some of that criticism is fair. Siri has lagged. Vision Pro has not yet become a mass-market product. The upgrade cycle for phones is slower than it used to be. Regulators are pushing harder against the App Store and platform control. Apple does not have an easy road ahead.
But Srouji and Ternus are steering from inside one of the strongest hardware machines in the world.
That machine is not just a factory network or a chip team or a design studio. It is the unusual ability to point silicon, software, industrial design, manufacturing, retail, services, and developer tools in roughly the same direction. Many companies can do one or two of those things well. Apple’s advantage has always been that it can make them converge inside a product cycle.
This is why the Ive comparison is useful, as long as it does not get stretched too far. Ive’s Apple made the outside of the device feel inevitable. Srouji’s Apple tries to make the inside of the device difficult to imitate. Ive helped define the look of the modern consumer computer. Srouji helped define the hardware foundation that lets Apple control performance, efficiency, privacy, and product timing at a level few competitors can match.
The difference is that Ive’s work photographed beautifully. Srouji’s work mostly shows up as battery life, silence, speed, heat that never arrives, a camera that processes the frame before the user thinks about it, or a laptop that wakes instantly and keeps going for hours. The achievement is not less real because it is less visible.
Apple now has to prove that this internal advantage can carry it through a more difficult period. AI is changing what people expect from devices. The iPhone is mature. New categories are expensive and uncertain. Regulators are more willing to question the business model. The company cannot rely forever on better chips and longer battery life as the whole story.
Still, Apple’s best chance probably comes from the same place its best products usually come from: not one breakthrough feature, but a controlled stack where the pieces reinforce each other. That is where Srouji’s influence becomes important. Custom silicon gives Apple options. Hardware engineering turns those options into products. Software decides whether the user feels the benefit. The company wins when all three move together.
That is the Apple Srouji now helps lead.
A decade ago, Apple’s most recognizable design language was visible from the outside: materials, thinness, restraint, and the removal of anything that felt unnecessary. Today, that same instinct lives deeper inside the device.
Put the right engines on the chip. Move the right work on-device. Use less power. Keep heat down. Protect privacy. Let the hardware disappear before the user has to think about it.
That is still design.
It has moved beneath the glass.
