On August 15, 1969, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was born — evolving from INCOSPAR, which had been set up in 1962 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. Operating under the Department of Space, ISRO’s motto — “Space technology in the service of humankind” — reflects its commitment to making space science accessible and useful for all.
Milestone Missions That Defined an Era
ISRO’s history is a string of remarkable firsts and bold milestones:
- 1975 — Aryabhata India’s very first satellite, marking the country’s entry into the space age.
- PSLV & GSLV Launch Vehicles The backbone of India’s space program, known worldwide for cost-effective and reliable launches.
- 2008 — Chandrayaan-1 The mission that discovered water molecules on the Moon.
- 2023 — Chandrayaan-3 A proud moment: India became the first nation to successfully land near the Moon’s south pole.
- 2013 — Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) India became the first country to reach Mars on its maiden attempt — and the first Asian nation to orbit the Red Planet.
- Aditya-L1 India’s first dedicated solar mission, now on its way to the L1 Lagrange point to study the Sun’s atmosphere using advanced instruments like the SUIT telescope.
Human Spaceflight & Global Collaboration
India’s Gaganyaan program aims to send Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit by 2026. Before the crewed flight, a series of uncrewed test missions will ensure safety and readiness.
On the international stage, ISRO has teamed up with NASA for NISAR — a cutting-edge Earth observation satellite with dual-frequency radar, designed to monitor environmental changes with unmatched precision every 12 days.
Infrastructure & Leadership
ISRO’s primary launch hub, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota, is the beating heart of India’s space launches. A new Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) complex in Tamil Nadu is in development, expanding India’s capacity for rapid, small-payload launches.
