Somewhere in the 32,000 numbered FreeCell deals that shipped with Windows, there is exactly one that cannot be won. Not by you. Not by a champion. Not by a computer that can see every card and never makes a mistake. Its number is 11982, and it is the most famous hand in solitaire.

Here’s how it earned that title.

A game everyone thought was always winnable

FreeCell arrived as a throwaway extra in Windows, and it came with a quiet promise baked into its reputation: every deal is solvable. Unlike Klondike, where a large share of hands are dead on arrival, FreeCell lays all 52 cards face up from the start. Nothing is hidden. No luck after the deal. For years, players simply assumed that meant every game could be won with enough thought.

Then, in 1994, someone decided to check all of them.

The Internet FreeCell Project

Dave Ring organized a distributed, pre-web effort by email: volunteers each claimed blocks of deal numbers and tried to solve every single one of the 32,000 games the Microsoft version could produce. Hundreds of people played thousands of hands. One by one, the deals fell.

All of them came back solved — except one. Deal number 11982 defeated every human who tried it.

Proven impossible, not just hard

Being unbeaten by humans is one thing; being unwinnable is a stronger claim. Later, solitaire solvers exhausted the entire move tree of deal 11982 — every branch, every order — and confirmed what the volunteers suspected: there is no sequence of moves that clears all 52 cards. It isn’t merely brutal. It is mathematically dead. Of the classic 32,000, it stands alone.

Why it still matters

Because 11982 is the reason “guaranteed solvable” means something. A well-made FreeCell will happily deal you any of the 31,999 winnable numbers at random, and quietly skip the one that isn’t — so every game you start can, in principle, be won. That single excluded number is the proof the promise is real.
