VFD vs Soft Starter: Which One Does Your Motor Need?
Choosing between a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and a Soft Starter is one of the most common decisions in industrial motor control. Both devices reduce mechanical stress during motor startup, but they work differently and serve distinct purposes. This guide will help you make the right choice.
What is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)?
A VFD, also known as an AC drive, inverter, or variable speed drive, controls motor speed by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. VFDs convert incoming AC power to DC, then back to AC at the desired frequency.
Key capabilities of VFDs:
• Precise speed control from 0–100% (and sometimes beyond) • Soft starting and stopping • Energy savings through speed reduction • Torque control • Regenerative braking capability
What is a Soft Starter?
A soft starter gradually ramps up voltage to a motor during startup, reducing inrush current and mechanical stress. Unlike VFDs, soft starters don’t control speed during normal operation — once the motor reaches full speed, the soft starter typically bypasses itself.
Key capabilities of soft starters: • Reduced starting current (typically 2–4x vs 6–8x for direct-on-line) • Smooth acceleration and deceleration • Lower cost than VFDs • Simpler installation and programming
VFD vs Soft Starter: Key Differences
Speed Control: • VFD: Full speed control throughout operation • Soft Starter: Only controls starting and stopping; motor runs at full speed
Energy Efficiency:
• VFD: Significant energy savings when running below full speed • Soft Starter: No energy savings during operation
Cost:
• VFD: Higher initial cost, but potential energy savings offset this • Soft Starter: Lower initial cost, simpler solution
Complexity:
• VFD: More parameters to configure, requires more expertise • Soft Starter: Simpler setup with fewer parameters
When to Choose a VFD
Choose a VFD when:
• You need variable speed control (fans, pumps, conveyors) • Energy savings are important (pumps and fans offer 20–50% savings) • Precise process control is required • The application requires frequent starts and stops • You need regenerative braking or torque control
When to Choose a Soft Starter
Choose a soft starter when:
• The motor only needs to run at full speed • Budget is limited • You simply need to reduce starting current and mechanical stress • The application has infrequent starts • Space is limited (soft starters are typically smaller)
