Last night the Grit channel, 31–3 on OTA in NYC, ran Santa Fe Passage (1955), a solid western starring John Payne, Faith Domergue, Slim Pickens, Rod Cameron, Leo Gordon and Anthony Caruso. There were two elements I really liked: the honesty of the protagonist’s hatred of Indians, and a fascinating horse stampede. It was directed by William Witney, who devoted his entire life to the business, starting at the very bottom as a teen. He graduated to director, Hollywood’s youngest, at 21. At first he worked on serials. He developed the practice of filming fight scenes in segments rather than continuously from start to finish, which allowed stuntmen to maximize their energy. During WWII he served as a Lieutenant in charge of a photography unit. There are 140 titles under his name at IMDb, career spanning to 1982. That figure does not do justice to his prolific track record, as he helmed more than a hundred TV show episodes, including 30 of Stories of the Century, for which he won an Emmy shared with several others, 30 of Bonanza and 37 of Frontier Doctor. While none of his films are considered classics, many are rated well above average. Married long term twice, he was a father of one. An author of two books on cinema, he passed away at 86 in 2002.
