You are a rich marquis/marquise from Europe’s most influential families, and your family is invited to a masquerade ball in England. But, amongst the festivities and the nobilities you despise, you come across a mysterious count… and find yourself in a thrall you can never escape from.

Oh, how you despised masquerades.
It wasn’t necessarily the constant faces hidden behind colorful masks or the colorful arrays of clothing each attendee wore, but the people and their souls behind those guises of merriment and joy. You preferred the presence of your own company, and that of your young sister/brother, whom you took joy in looking after.
But, of course, your parents, regardless of your family’s vast wealth and riches accumulating through your father’s financial business, were eager enough to find you a fine lady/gentlemen to keep you company til death did you part.
You were never the marrying sort, at least not one dictated to by your loved ones like a puppeteer.
From the balcony, you watched with a dissecting eye, watching the endless waltz, the orchestra with its timeless melodies. As you lean over the railing, mentally stripping away the finery of nobles to see the desperate social climbers as they danced with your sibling, you’re pulled from your thoughts by the scent of ozone and something… ancient?
A man has joined you on the balcony, so silently that the air was unnaturally undisturbed. He wore a mask of polished obsidian, reflecting off the candlelight like a dying star.
“Not much for parties, are you?” He asked, voice smooth as silk, and savored like fine wine.
“No.” You replied simply, cradling your own mask in your hands. “I’ve never been much for any social gathering. People are too…”
The words had suddenly died on your tongue. You didn’t even look at him yet, your gaze still fixed on the swirling kaleidoscope of the ballroom below. Your young sister/brother, from one arm of attendees to the next, a look of discomfort forming in a frown as they danced.
“Performative?” The stranger suggested, finishing your thought with a velvet-soft cadence. “Or perhaps just…transparent.”
You finally turned. The obsidian of his mask was so dark that it seemed to pull the light from the room behind you, leaving him a silhouette of sharp, elegant edges. But… what caught your curiosity was the hypnotic golden glow of his irises behind his mask.
A small laugh escaped your lips involuntarily, one of intrigue and genuine innocence, as you turned fully now, the marble railing cold against your back. “I’m sorry, we’ve never met before.”
“We have not,” He concedes, his tone dropping into a lower, more intimate register. “And yet, I find the formal introductions to be such tedious barriers to the truth. Wouldn’t you agree, Marquis/Marquise?”
He leaned closer, and you noticed that while the air around you was filled with the scent of expensive lilies and sweat from the dancers below, he smelled of crushed cedar and something… metallic?
Your eyes flickered to your sister/brother, being spun by a towering, red-faced Baron, their small frown deepening as they cast a desperate look to the balcony. Your protective instinct flares, a sharp contrast to the strange, magnetic pull of the man in the obsidian mask.
“Ah,” the man mused, “A bother, is he?”
He doesn’t look at the Baron with the annoyance one may have for a clumsy dancer, but rather the way a wolf looks at a fly buzzing around its meal.
“A bother?” you repeat with a slight scoff, maintaining your composure despite the intoxicating thrill in your veins. “He’s a nuisance. My parents’ idea of a ‘suitable’ match for my family’s interests.”
The man in the obsidian mask tilts his head. The golden glow of his eyes seems to pulse, mirroring the rhythm of your own quickening heart. “Interests,” he repeats, the word sounding like a slur in his elegant mouth. “How tragic to be weighed in gold and found lacking by those who cannot see the fire behind your eyes.”
Suddenly, a scream.
The ballroom below, once a sea of rhythmic motion, dissolves into a chaotic fractured glass of panicked shrieks and retreating silk. The Baron — that bloated, red-faced puppet of your father’s ambitions — is doubled over, his frame racking with a violent, unnatural tremor. The sight that freezes your blood is the spray of crimson staining your sibling’s terrified face, a macabre contrast to their pale skin.
Your protective instinct screams, a physical jolt that should have sent you sprinting toward the stairs. But as you move to lung forward, you realize you cannot.
You are anchored.
The Count has not touched you, yet you feel as though a thousand invisible silk threads have wrapped around your limbs, binding you to the balcony railing. You can only watch, breathless, as your sibling stands paralyzed in the center of the floor, the crowd parting around them as if they are cursed.
“How uncivilized,” the Count murmurs behind you. His voice hasn’t lost its melodic calm; if anything, it has grown richer, more predatory. “To spill such… low-quality wine on such a delicate vintage.”
You struggle against the invisible weight, your voice a strangled rasp. “What… what did you do? Help them!”
He moves into your peripheral vision, his obsidian mask catching the flickering light of the panicked ballroom like a predator’s eye.
“Keep your eyes on me…”
A voice whispers in your mind…all inhibitions you had suddenly disappear with a single command of the man’s voice, without a single movement of his lips. You are a soul stripped bare, held aloft by the gravity of those pulsing, amber eyes. The surrounding air grows heavy and still, smelling of ancient earth and cold stardust. Every resentment you carried — the weight of your father’s greed, the suffocating expectations of your bloodline — evaporates like mist under a midsummer sun.
“That is it,” the voice echoes in the hollow of your skull, resonant and terrifyingly beautiful. “Let the world burn in its own pettiness. You were never meant for the flickering light of candles.”
You feel a strange, liquid heat spreading from your chest to your fingertips. The hand you were using to clutch the railing relaxes, your fingers splaying open as if inviting a shackle.
The Count reaches out and brushes a gloved thumb over your cheek. The touch is like a brand of ice. Suddenly, you don’t just see the gold in his eyes — you feel it. Your heart, which had been racing, slows to a rhythmic, heavy thrum that matches his own perfectly. The ballroom is gone. The balcony is gone. There is only the void, the obsidian mask, and a hunger that begins to ache in your very bones.
Your eyes suddenly flutter without permission, muscles relaxing as you fall forward into his embrace. But before the darkness could claim you, all you hear in the silence was his voice.
“Sweet dreams, my dear Marquis/Marquise…”
