Exhaustion and Soul Fatigue Are Not The Same
At first they can feel identical.
Both make it hard to get out of bed. Both leave you staring into space after a long shift. Both make you long for a day off, a quiet room, or a few hours with no one asking anything of you.
Exhaustion and soul fatigue are not the same thing.

Exhaustion lives in the body. It arrives after twelve-hour shifts, interrupted sleep, back to back responsibilities, and days that demand more energy than we have to give. Exhaustion is physical. It is the heaviness in your limbs, the aching feet, the mental fog that comes from doing too much for too long.
The good news is that exhaustion often responds to rest. A weekend away. A good night’s sleep. A slow morning with coffee on the porch. Time allows the body to recover.
Soul fatigue is different. Soul fatigue settles deeper.
It appears when you’ve been showing up for everyone else but haven’t shown up for yourself in a very long time. When your role becomes your entire identity. When you can remember what you do, but struggle to remember who you are.
A nurse experiencing exhaustion says, “I need a break.”
A nurse suffering soul fatigue says, “I don’t know what’s missing, but something is.”
Soul fatigue whispers questions that rest alone cannot answer.
“When was the last time I created something just because it brought me joy.”
“Who am I when I’m not taking care of someone else.”
That’s why a vacation sometimes fails to fix what feels broken. the body may return refreshed, but the spirit still feels disconnected.
Soul fatigue is not always a sign that you need to do less. sometimes it is a sign that you need to reconnect. Reconnect with curiosity, creativity, or wonder. Reconnect with the version of yourself that existed before life became a series of obligations and responsibilities.
For myself, healing from soul fatigue begins in surprisingly simple ways. A quiet walk, a song, sewing, having lunch with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in a while.
Not because these activities solve every problem, but because they remind me that I am more than my work. They remind me that beneath the scrubs is a whole person waiting to be rediscovered.
Exhaustion ask for rest. Soul fatigue ask for reconnection. Only one can be healed by sleep alone.
Reflect on the last time you created something that brought you joy.
