5 Quranic Duas to Make During Times of Turmoil

Why Forgiveness Precedes Victory

A lot of us are overwhelmed by the news in the world these days.

The confusion can make it hard to see a path forward where things are getting better.

We struggle with big questions about the world, our leaders, and even our own beliefs, often feeling lost in the noise.

When I feel like nothing is making sense, I always turn to the Quran for the ultimate truth and clarity.

This week, I’ve found hope and strength in five specific Quranic duas that speak directly about turmoil.

They’re powerful reminders to lean on Allah, the Best Disposer of Affairs, for protection, steadfastness, and victory. I’m sharing them in hopes they bring you a sense of calm and resilience too.

As you read through, I invite you to pay close attention to a powerful, recurring theme: the strong emphasis on asking for forgiveness.

1. Protection from persecution

Our Lord! Do not subject us to the persecution of the disbelievers. Forgive us, our Lord! You ˹alone˺ are truly the Almighty, All-Wise.

2. Forgiveness and unity for the believers

Our Lord! Forgive us and our fellow believers who preceded us in faith, and do not allow bitterness into our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Ever Gracious, Most Merciful.

3. Victory over the disbelieving people

Our Lord! Forgive our sins and excesses, make our steps firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.

4. Increase the wrongdoers only in destruction

My Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house in faith, and ˹all˺ believing men and women. And increase the wrongdoers only in destruction.

5. Do not burden us with what we cannot bear

Allah does not require of any soul more than what it can afford. All good will be for its own benefit, and all evil will be to its own loss. ˹The believers pray˺, “Our Lord! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! Do not place a burden on us like the one you placed on those before us. Our Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our ˹only˺ Guardian. So grant us victory over the disbelieving people.”

As I hope you could notice in these supplications, they all include having humility and asking for forgiveness.

It’s a reminder that before we ask for the help of Allah we should start by reflecting on our sins first.

It’s easy to expect Allah’s intervention, but the emphasis on forgiveness reminds us of our responsibility. When we seek his support, we must also consider: what are we doing on our part for Him and for the world?

True reliance isn’t passive; our prayers for victory and protection are paired with a call to righteous action. If we ask for justice, we must strive to embody it, becoming instruments of good in a world that needs it.

Being the flawed humans that we are, we constantly fail at this very first step. Thus, the plea for forgiveness directly becomes the means by which we access Allah’s infinite mercy.

Let us commit to asking for forgiveness regularly and making these duas frequently, leaning on Allah, the Best Disposer of Affairs, for protection, steadfastness, and victory.
