Getting Lost on Purpose

Introduction

A piece themed around getting lost. I composed it with the idea: what if I tried to portray in music those scenes that occasionally appear in dramas, anime, or games — when someone is lost and suddenly thinks, “Wait… haven’t I passed through here before?” Actually getting lost would be a problem, of course, but perhaps you could enjoy it with the same feeling as stepping into a maze attraction at an amusement park.

Characteristics of the Piece

In the sense that the same phrases are repeated continuously, I think the idea is somewhat close to that of minimal music. Persistent repetition, the same phrases appearing here and there without any clear sense of intention, and everything continuing without developing into anything in particular. The sense of floating that emerges from this becomes one of the characteristics of the piece.

Structure of the Piece

The melody, chords, and bass phrases that appear during the first minute contain all of the material used throughout the piece. These elements are rearranged by changing their registers, altering their combinations, and repeating them in different orders. I structured the piece so that it would not create a clear sense of destination or direction, making it difficult to tell where the music currently is or where it is heading. To create the feeling of “Wait… haven’t I passed through here before?”, the individual elements are combined mostly in their original forms, with almost no variation applied to them.

Performance Notes

Since this piece consists of a simple texture and is dominated by repetition, it may be interesting to vary the phrasing according to the atmosphere of the moment or your own mood.
