“Nothing is truly urgent except love”
A radical notion for a workaholic…

I took the time to spell out Love in shells on a beach this summer
Have a listen to this as a Spoken Word Poem here.
“Nothing is truly urgent except love”
My boss said this to me.
He’s been dropping these little offerings on the metaphorical boardroom table throughout our meetings.
Counter cultural, somewhat cheeky, reminders that ‘we’re not saving lives here’.
We have time. Let’s enjoy this shall we?
What is urgency any way?
I’m spotting this rush oozing through in my language.
- ‘we need this done now!’
- ‘we’ve only got 15 minutes left!’
- ‘how is it already Thursday?!’
It occurred to me that if everything is a rush, then I’m hurrying through most of my life.
We’re obsessed with having ‘not enough time’ and then we run through the days. What a paradox.
My boss shared a playlist he’d put together with a mixture of what he calls ‘soul bathing’ music. Some instrumental, some meditative, ranging from pop to faith based tracks.
I was having a listen and came across Will Reagan, a Christian artist with a voice so unhurried his songs instigate an immediate anti-urgent pause.
I stood in my kitchen staring out the window (not a usual practice for me) listening as the vibrations wafted like a warm breeze into my being…
“I’m not in a hurry, when it comes to your presence, when it comes to your spirit, when it comes to your voice.
/ I’m learning to listen, to just in your nearness, I’m starting to notice you are speaking .” He sings.
He’s referring to his relationship with (his version of a) God.
And whatever your belief system is, I trust you can transpose this supportive message of ‘slowing down’.
“I’m not in a hurry” I wrote up on my whiteboard. Which I latterly changed to:
“I take the time.”
Whatever time it takes. I take that amount of time.
Instead of rushing to my laptop to check an email. ‘I’m not in a hurry when it comes to your presence’ I think, and give my dog a gentle ear scratch and revel in her slow, sweet, eyes-still-shut yawn.
I catch myself running through a mental to do list whilst a friend is talking to me, and remember, ‘I’m not in a hurry when it comes to your voice’. I refocus on the words they’ve chosen to share, and smile in thanks that I have them in my life.
We have these reminders all around us.
In the beauty of a sunrise, in the warmth of a blanket, in the laughter of strangers on the street outside our window. Nods from whatever higher power or otherness you’ve chosen to believe in. God, Mother Earth, your higher self, the collective consciousness, the ‘soup of love’ as I’ve started to refer to it as.
Nods to remind you that…
‘nothing is truly urgent, except love’.
