Are Humans Struggling to Keep Up With Modern Life?

Thoughts on the Growing Gap Between Our Nervous Systems, Minds, and Bodies

Hello from ME:RESET 🌱

Today, I’d like to share something I’ve been thinking about lately.

More and more often, I find myself wondering:

Why do so many people seem exhausted these days?

Stress is not new.

Relationship problems are not new.

Work-related struggles are not new.

Yet something feels different.

The kind of fatigue I see today seems deeper, more persistent, and harder to recover from.

So in this article, I’d like to separate what is reasonably supported by current neuroscience and psychology from my own observations and personal hypotheses.

What We Know From Science

One important thing to understand is that human beings don’t operate through the mind alone.

Our experiences are influenced by many interconnected systems:

  • The brain
    • The nervous system
    • Physical health
    • Sleep
    • Nutrition
    • Breathing
    • Emotions
    • Thoughts

These systems constantly affect one another.

Take sleep, for example.

Research has shown that insufficient sleep can contribute to:

  • Reduced concentration
    • Poorer decision-making
    • Difficulty regulating emotions
    • Increased anxiety
    • Greater impulsivity

This means that sometimes what appears to be a “negative mindset” may actually be influenced by physical or neurological factors.

Our thoughts do not exist in isolation from our bodies.

Chronic Stress Changes How We Experience the World

Another area that has received significant attention in neuroscience is the impact of chronic stress.

Research suggests that prolonged stress can influence the balance between brain regions involved in threat detection and those involved in planning, reflection, and self-regulation.

When stress levels remain high for extended periods, people often report experiences such as:

  • Constantly imagining worst-case scenarios
    • Feeling unusually sensitive to criticism
    • Thinking in extremes
    • Seeing small problems as overwhelming

This is one reason I often say:

Before trying to change your thoughts, it may be worth paying attention to your current state.

The Idea of Cognitive Load

Another useful concept is cognitive load.

Simply put, it refers to the amount of information our brains must process at any given time.

Human attention is limited.

Our mental resources are not infinite.

Today, many people are exposed to a constant stream of:

  • Social media updates
    • Messages and notifications
    • News headlines
    • Videos
    • Advertisements
    • Work communication
    • Social obligations

When too much information accumulates, many people experience:

  • Difficulty focusing
    • Mental fatigue
    • Irritability
    • Feeling disconnected from what they truly want

This is not necessarily a matter of willpower.

Sometimes it is simply a matter of cognitive capacity.

My Personal Hypothesis

Everything up to this point is based on ideas that are relatively well established in current research.

What follows is different.

This is not something science has fully proven.

It is simply a perspective I have developed through years of observation and conversations with people.

Perhaps Human Beings Are Struggling to Adapt to the Speed of Change

One question keeps coming back to me:

What if part of our collective exhaustion comes from the speed at which our environment has changed?

Human biology evolves slowly.

Technology evolves rapidly.

Just a few decades ago:

  • A household might have had one telephone.
    • Delayed responses were normal.
    • Letters took days to arrive.
    • Waiting was part of life.

Today, we live in a culture of:

  • Instant messaging
    • Read receipts
    • Online status indicators
    • Constant connectivity

The expectations surrounding communication have changed dramatically.

The New Anxiety of Constant Availability

Consider messaging apps.

Many people have experienced thoughts like:

  • “Did I upset them?”
    • “Are they ignoring me?”
    • “Did I do something wrong?”

simply because a reply took longer than expected.

Of course, not everyone reacts this way.

But I sometimes wonder whether certain forms of anxiety are being amplified by a world where we are almost always reachable.

In another era, people might simply have assumed:

“They’ll get back to me when they can.”

Is Social Media a Natural Environment for the Human Brain?

This is another question I often ask myself.

Social media has enormous benefits.

It provides education, connection, inspiration, and opportunity.

I use it myself.

This isn’t an argument against technology.

But I do wonder:

Was the human brain designed to absorb hundreds of other people’s lives every single day?

Success.

Failure.

Anger.

Celebration.

Conflict.

Achievement.

Grief.

We can now witness all of it, almost continuously.

It seems reasonable to ask whether that level of exposure affects our nervous systems in ways we are only beginning to understand.

When the Mind, Body, and Nervous System Stop Moving Together

This next idea is simply my own way of describing something I frequently observe.

It is not a medical term.

Sometimes it seems as though a person’s:

  • Body
    • Nervous system
    • Thoughts
    • Emotions

are all moving in different directions.

The body is exhausted.

The mind won’t slow down.

The nervous system remains activated.

Emotions become unstable.

A person wants to sleep, but cannot rest.

Wants to stop thinking, but cannot stop thinking.

I sometimes describe this as becoming out of sync with oneself.

What “Neutral” Means to Me

At ME:RESET, being neutral does not mean being positive all the time.

It does not mean feeling energetic every day.

To me, neutrality means:

  • Being aware of your current state
    • Resting when you need rest
    • Recognizing when your mind is overloaded
    • Not being completely consumed by emotions

It is the feeling that your mind, body, emotions, and nervous system are working together rather than pulling in opposite directions.

Maybe We Need More Recovery, Not More Effort

All of this has led me to a simple conclusion.

Perhaps what many people need today is not another productivity strategy.

Perhaps they need more opportunities to reconnect with basic human rhythms.

  • ☀️ Light and natural daily cycles
    • 🌿 Breathing and movement
    • 🌾 Nourishing food
    • 💧 Sleep and recovery

These are not extraordinary skills.

They are the foundations of being human.

That idea is one of the reasons I created the concept behind my lifestyle program, which focuses on restoring balance through everyday habits.

Not a place for competition.

Not a place for pushing harder.

But a place to reconnect the mind, body, and nervous system.

A Final Thought

Lately, I’ve found myself wondering whether people break down not because they are weak, but because too many parts of life have fallen out of alignment.

The body.

The nervous system.

Thought patterns.

Daily routines.

If that is true, then perhaps the answer is not self-criticism.

Perhaps the first step is simply learning how to reconnect with ourselves.

In a world that keeps moving faster, becoming more human again may be one of the most important things we can do. 🌱
