Why You feel like a Failure at 17
You’re seventeen, and you already feel like a failure. You’re JUST seventeen but for you seventeen is only three years away from twenty, which feels like “the end of the world” to you. You feel this constant fear and anxiety that if you don’t achieve ALL your goals and have it all figured out by 20, your life’s going to end in a miserable way.
You have even started believing it lately, because when you look around yourself, your peers, your own friends, and almost everyone your age seems to be SUPER SUCCESSFUL, someone is already earning good sums of money, someone already has the most aesthetic physique, someone is already getting scholarships from prestigious colleges. Pretty much all of them have their lives figured out at seventeen and they are probably going to rule the world by twenty.
And You? What do you have? the only thing you know is that you also want ALL of these things. You think you are nothing.
But that’s far from the truth. You’re comparing your entire life to their best 1% slice. The idea of everything ending at twenty feels reals, but it is only a story your brain made up because twenty sounds like a “deadline”. You’re noticing other’s progress but don’t yet see your own path clearly. At seventeen, almost everyone is still experimenting, copying others and figuring out what they even like.
And you are not “nothing”. You are self-aware enough to question your life, and that is not “nothing”. The real problem isn’t that you’re behind, it’s that, YOU WANT EVERYTHING, SO YOU’RE COMMITED TO NOTHING, SO IT FEELS LIKE YOU HAVE NOTHING. What those successful people did differently was, they didn’t do everything, they picked one lane early and went deep. The athlete — trained for years The scholar — focused on academics The creator — posted consistently
What you’re seeing is the result of focus, not magic. What you can do right now is, not become everything by twenty. Pick two core lanes for the next six to twelve months. That’s it. Not ten things.
Accept this uncomfortable truth — Choosing two things means temporarily being “average” at the other eight. That’s not failure, that’s strategy. Redefine what “winning at twenty” actually means. it does not mean, being famous or having everything figured out, instead, having direction, having discipline and having momentum. If by twenty you can, earn some money, are physically strong, are consistent, you’re already ahead of most people.
