The builder who was there from the beginning.

In 2002, I built my first website using a tool called Adobe PageMill.

Most developers under 30 have never heard of it.

It was a tiny HTML WYSIWYG editor, “What You See Is What You Get.” No frameworks. No npm. No Stack Overflow. You dragged text and images onto a page, uploaded the files via FTP, and then held your breath, hoping that Internet Explorer would render it correctly. Sometimes it did. Often it didn’t.

That was my entry point into the world of web technology. And sitting here in 2026, having watched this industry transform across five distinct eras, I feel compelled to tell this story, not just as personal history, but because I think it contains something important for every builder, founder, and technologist operating in Africa today.

The web I met in 2002 was read-only.

Nobody called it Web 1.0 back then. We just called it “the internet.” Static HTML pages that had to be manually edited every time something changed. No CMS or databases behind the pages. No social anything. You consumed what someone else had published, and that was it.

The tools of that era tell you everything about its character: Adobe PageMill. Microsoft FrontPage. HotDog HTML Editor. Netscape Composer. AOL dial-up. Net2Phone for Voice over IP, when calling abroad, felt like science fiction. Some Nigerian fast business people made a kill out of that era.

I was also learning in that environment. Manually writing HTML tables for page layouts. Embedding GIFs. Waiting for pages to load on connections that moved at speeds that would embarrass a 2026 smartwatch.

But even then, I could sense something stirring underneath the surface.

Then Macromedia Flash arrived, and the web became a canvas.

Suddenly, designers like me could animate. They could build immersive experiences. Entire websites became Flash productions with dramatic intros and interactive interfaces that felt like something out of a film set. Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Photoshop became the professional’s toolkit.

It was the golden age of web design as an art form. Did I tell you guys that my background is rooted in Fine & Applied Arts?

Never mind about that.

Flash carried the seeds of its own death. Poor SEO. Heavy bandwidth. Security holes. And then in 2010, Steve Jobs refused to put it on the iPhone, and the countdown of its death began. Adobe killed it entirely in 2020.

That taught me something I have never forgotten: no technology, however dominant, is permanent. Timing and platform decisions kill empires.

The PHP era changed what a website was.

From around 2000 to 2010, the web stopped being brochures and became applications. PHP, MySQL, the LAMP stack, Linux, Apache, and MySQL, PHP, gave developers the ability to build things that stored data, processed forms, handled user accounts, and published content dynamically.

WordPress launched in 2003. Facebook in 2004. YouTube in 2005. Twitter in 2006. Drupal, my beloved web development framework, was initially released on January 15, 2001.

The web became read-write. Users stopped just consuming. They started creating.

I was building in this era. Watching platforms emerge that would reshape human communication, commerce, and culture. At the time, we had no idea how profound those shifts would become. Drupal 6 was released on 13 February 2008, and I got hooked from that moment onwards.

Web 2.0 made the web social. The smartphone made it personal.

AJAX, APIs, jQuery, real-time updates without page reloads, suddenly, web applications could behave like desktop software. Google Maps and Gmail showed us what was possible.

Then 2007 happened. The iPhone. Then Android the following year. Followed by App Stores. And overnight, developers had to think about multiple screens, multiple contexts, multiple user behaviours.

Responsive design. HTML5. CSS3. Progressive Web Apps. HTML5 quietly absorbed everything Flash had promised and delivered it without the baggage.

JavaScript went from a scripting afterthought to the backbone of entire platforms. React. Vue.js. Angular. Node.js. Next.js. The JavaScript renaissance produced Single Page Applications, SaaS platforms, real-time dashboards, and enterprise systems, all running in a browser.

The web had become, without anyone formally declaring it, an operating system. Facebook played a monumental role in modernizing JavaScript, transforming it from a simple web scripting tool into a comprehensive, enterprise-grade language. By open-sourcing critical frameworks and specifications, Facebook fundamentally shifted how developers build web, mobile, and desktop applications today.

And then came the chapter I helped build in Nigeria: Web3.

Blockchain introduced a paradigm shift so fundamental that it required a new vocabulary. Smart contracts. Digital assets. DeFi. NFTs. DAOs. Decentralized identity. Many thanks to the Ethereum Foundation and its developer community.

The web’s journey, from Read to Write, to Own, reached its logical next stage.

As the founder of the Blockchain Nigeria User Group, I watched Nigeria find itself at the centre of one of the most significant grassroots blockchain adoptions on the African continent. We were not peripheral to this story. We were part of its authorship. In 2021, we launched our BlockchainDev1000 initiative with a target of training 1000 blockchain developers in Nigeria. We exceeded that number.

Now we are in the era I find most astonishing to witness.

Artificial intelligence is not just changing what applications can do. It is changing how applications are built.

I built my first website by manually typing HTML. Today, an AI can generate a functional web application from a plain English description or by audio correspondence. Copilots. Autonomous agents. Natural language coding. Low-code and no-code platforms that put creation in the hands of people who could never have written a line of code.

The web is no longer static pages. It is no longer even just applications. It is becoming intelligent infrastructure, …systems that converse, reason, generate, and act.

Web 4.0, the Intelligent Web, is not a prediction. It is already here, unevenly distributed.

From Adobe PageMill to AI agents in 25 years.

From AOL dial-up to decentralized intelligence.

From manually editing HTML tables to watching machines write software from human intent.

I have had the rare privilege of not just observing this evolution, but of building within it, advocating for it, and helping shape Africa’s participation in it.

The journey of the web is not merely the story of technology.

It is the story of how humanity learned to connect, then to create, then to collaborate, and now increasingly, to delegate intelligence itself.

And the most important chapter is still being written.

If you are a young developer, a founder, or a builder anywhere on this continent reading this, you are not too late.

You are exactly on time.

The platforms that will define the next 25 years have not been built yet.
