Understanding Generation Z’s Engagement with Idol’s Content on Social Media

Why do generation Z keep engaging with idol’s content on social media even though it is a one-sided interaction?

Nowadays, it does not take too long to encounter idol’s content while scrolling through TikTok, Instagram, or X. From fan edits, memes, live streams to dance practice clips, this kind of content can be easily found with just a single scroll on our phones. For Generation Z, engaging with idols in online space is not just for their entertainment. It is a part where they can express their identity, socialize, and feel connected with others in the digital world.

However, what exactly are the reasons for those engagements with idols’ content on social media? Why does it matter?

Gen Z and Their Characteristics

Generation Z is the generation that grows up with social media. For them, platforms are not just tools for communication. Platforms serve as a space where they shape their identity and relationships bonding. While older generations heavily relied on television or magazines when they consumed celebrities’ content back in the days,in the present day, Generation Z encounters idols’ content on social media in an interactive and algorithmic driven environment.

In online spaces, idols are massively present. Idols’ posts like selfies, responses to their fans, dance trends, and live streaming create a constant accessibility that leads to a sense of closeness that the older generation of celebrities never allowed.

Nowadays, engagement does not stop at just passive consumption. Interactions like sharing content, commenting, liking idol’s posts, or creating fans’ content are all parts of participation. Fans are not just by standing audiences but a collaborator in the on-going digital narrative.

The Rise of Parasocial Bonds

The key concept that explains this phenomenon is parasocial engagement. The term refers to one-sided emotional connections that foster within the audience’s side with their favorite media figures. It is obvious that idols may not personally know their fans, but the fans’ experiences behind the screen are the relationship that is emotionally meaningful and real.

In this increasingly mediated world, social media intensifies parasocial relationships in powerful ways. For example, when idols address camera directly, call their fans by their username, or share their daily life, the boundary between them and their fans becomes blurred. Therefore, this blurred identity becomes appealing for those who often value authenticity and emotional openness.

Community and Identity

In the present day, engagement with idols’ content is not just an individual experience. Fan communities play a crucial role in shaping how Generation Z interacts with idols in the online spaces.

Through hashtags and fan accounts, fans form communities or fandoms that share their own inside jokes, emotional moments of their favorites, to collective goals like streaming milestone or voting campaigns. These spaces allow Generation Z to connect with others who share similar interests and emotional experiences.

Being in a part of a fandom is a form of social identity for many fans. The way that idol’s fan supports a particular idol is how they show the world that this is who they are and where they belong to. This sense of belonging is important for Generation Z since they are the generation that navigate around social connections and self identification.

Why do Gen Z keep engaging with idols so deeply?

Understanding the reasons for Gen Z’s active engagement with idols’ content helps us look beyond the content itself and focus on what these audiences gain from it. According to Whiting and William (2013), there are several aspects of uses and gratification theory that can explain why individuals keep engaging with idols’ contents on social media including:

1. Entertainment

Idol’s content provides entertainment to their audience. Contents like variety show, livestream, and fan edit offer a moment of joy and excitement. Moreover, short form videos and interactive content fit naturally into Gen Z’s digital environments, which are fast paced and easy to access. This entertainment value makes idols’ content engaging and emotionally rewarding for the audiences.

2. Relaxation

For their audiences, idols’ content serves as a form of emotional relief. Watching the comforting messages or interactions can reduce stress and provide the sense of calmness. After the period of academic pressure or personal stress, idol’s content can function as a safe space where fans can escape from real-world situations for a moment.

3. Information Seeking

The audience engages with idols’ content to stay informed about their favorite idol. Social media offers a real-time update on idol’s activities and achievements. This instant flow of information makes fans feel connected and involved with the idol’s content.

4. Time passing

Social media is deeply integrated into everyone’s daily life, including Generation Z. Idols’ content in the social media space is often becomes a part of this habitual browsing. Activities like watching short videos, scrolling through feeds for updates, or engaging in fan discussions help pass time during breaks or the moments of boredom for the idol’s fans.

5. Social Media Interaction

Idols’ content encourages social interaction. In online spaces, fans often connect with one another through shared interests and collaborative activities. The activities like commenting, fan accounts, and fandom create an opportunity for conversation and bond building. Engagement with idols’ content is not only for fans and idols but also for the bond between fans themselves.

According to the study titled Exploration of Generation Z’s Parasocial Engagement with Idol’s on Social Media that explored the aspects of motivations behind Generation Z’s interaction with idols’ content based on the theories of uses and gratification and social identity. The study concluded that the aspects of entertainment, relaxation, time passing, and the needs to belong and connect to the community are all associated with Generation Z’s engagement with idols’ content. In addition, the results of this study highlighted that these interactions also leave a positive emotional impact on individuals that encourage parasocial relationships.

When Engagement Becomes Complicated

Idol culture on social media spaces is not just a passing trend; it reflects broader changes in how relationship, identity, and social media consumption play out in the digital age. Generation Z’s engagement with idols’ content shows how engagement, emotion, and community intersect in the online space.

Understanding Generation Z’s engagement is crucial not only for marketers or media producers, but also for educators and parents. Recognizing what needs are being fulfilled through the engagement helps us understand Generation Z, which is the gender that navigate connection as whole. They are finding meaning not just in content, but in the relationships and communities built around it.
