We Are All Stereotypes (And That’s Okay)

Ever walked into a meeting room and immediately seized the owner based on his attire, shoes, belts, yellowish teeth, messy hair, or an expensive suit that matched the black Smart Ring? I’ll be honest about this; I do.

This is because for meetings that I do not want to invest my time in, I will find an excuse and justify it with what I know is not a fair assessment. I stereotype the people that I will be meeting in the next hour. Is it wrong? More often than it taught me lessons after that.

While stereotypes can provide some benefits in business settings by enabling quick assessments and market insights, as well as enhancing team dynamics because we can ‘click’.

One advantage is that it enables us to respond rapidly to situations because we may have had a similar experience before. “Is this meeting going to end the way I anticipate? Perhaps.”

The lady with a laptop holding a pen, talking to a young couple with no kids by their sides, selling insurance or planning for a house renovation?

But over-reliance on stereotypes can also often lead to significant drawbacks, such as bias and miscommunication, which I learnt later. It makes us ignore differences between individuals; therefore we think things about people that might not be true.

Stereotypes can allow for rapid judgments about individuals based on group characteristics, which can save time in hiring or negotiations. Additionally, understanding cultural stereotypes can aid in tailoring products and marketing strategies to specific demographics, improving market penetration and customer engagement.

Get your antenna up and understand what is being stereotyped and what requires a deeper look into things before making any judgment.

That is a skill that every entrepreneur should have, especially to work under pressure where certain snap decision-making needs to be made.
