Cheer Cheese… such an original name

The Australian food brand Coon Cheese will be renamed CHEER following mounting pressure to change the name due to racist connotations. After more than eight decades on supermarket shelves, Coon Cheese will relaunch as ‘CHEER’ in July 2021.

The change comes after years of pressure on the dairy company to change its historical name connected with an offensive racial slur.

Coon Cheese was a staple in every Aussie’s fridge, but since it became Cheer, I refuse to buy it. It hasn’t made one bit of difference to their sales figures. The people who decided to change the name were the Canadian company Saputo. Now, if Saputo was a slang word for a Native American tribe, would Saputo change their name?

The cheddar was originally named after the American founder Edward William Coon. Nothing to do with our First Nations peoples. I never thought of an Aboriginal person when I was eating coon cheese. I’ve never referred to anybody as a coon, black or white. I have referred to some people as another 4 -letter c word but never coon.

If they had to do away with Coon, could they not have thought of a better name?

Sorry, Stephen V., this was a blunder in my opinion, but they never changed their mind and went back to the original Coon, and I’ve never bought Cheer Cheese, and I’m a cheese lover.
