African Roots and Rhythms: The Funkees (Nigeria)

This band got its start during the Nigerian Civil War. They were extremely popular and paved the way for artists such as Fela Kuti to come in with their own brand of traditional African mixed with modern Western rhythms.
They started out as an army band in the late 1960’s after the war, when people were ready for something a bit more upbeat, and their Afrofunk danceable grooves did not disappoint. They moved to London in 1973, but disbanded just four years later.

They released two albums during their time in the UK, but in 2012, Soundway Records put together a compilation of their greatest hits. This included songs from their LPs as well as 45’s recorded in Nigeria. One of their songs was recently featured on the TV Series “The Continental” on Amazon Prime.
